Couple of observations.

1. Keep your 'set list' down to two or three tunes - and be ready to abandon one of those.

2. Be ready to sing if you can even fake it. Any 'instrumental versions', BP will gong your ass.

3. Note what key you're playing in. Some of us have been known to transpose.

4. We got a metric f*ckton of bassists, so get ready to share the love.

More as it occurs to me.

I vote Tyler has to learn some cover tunes and play them with one of you guys.

Jack?

Send a list of several songs/bands and I’ll organize them and post them up. Unfortunately, since there are a bazillion song choices, chances of getting a direct match up this way are pretty slim. However you’ll be able to match up in a couple of different ways.

One way is jumping onboard someone else’s suggestions, i.e. Adelucia has submitted his suggestions above. Any guitar players that want jump on board with him can e-mail me and let me know.

Or you might see that you’re interested in the same band as someone else and decide on a song choice by that. For example:

You might see that that Bovinehost wants to do In the Navy by the Village People and Lucious wants to do YMCA by the same band. They’ve discovered they’re not only connected by cowboy hats but the same band as well; the Village People. So they get up with each other…..via PM or e-mail and discover they both know Macho Man and agree that’s the tune they’ll do together. Two snaps up in Z formation and we’ve got a match up. :D

5. As far as I know we have one drummer. John Ferraro is an AMAZING drummer. However if your song choices are drumline specific or full of stops and signature fills, we might need to check with him first. BP - anything to add here?

Another thought occurred to me. Is Mr. S Phillips hanging for the shindig?

You'd be hard pressed to stump John, and I know he'll give almost anything a go, but keep in mind that he's more accustomed to Larry Carlton than he is to Death Metal or Punk Anthems.

If you're unaccustomed to the unrehearsed jam, the cardinal rule is "Keep it simple."

You want to hit stuff that people (players) will know rather than trying to wow the crowd with your note-for-note rendition of Captain Beyond's debut album (side two). If it's in 11/32, leave it home. If you can respond to "Jump blues in C, start on the IV", you're going to be very popular on the bandstand.

If you can actually SING the song you want to play, your popularity increases exponentially with each verse you actually remember.

You might see that that Bovinehost wants to do In the Navy by the Village People and Lucious wants to do YMCA by the same band.

Or you might not see that.

:D

What you might see, as an example, is that I've played "Little Sister" with Cowpilot for a couple of years now, and it's three chords, nothing tricky, and I actually know the words (usually). So I say, "It's in E and it's Elvis, who can't figure that out?" And whoever looks blank stays at the table.

Or I might remember that Luscious has been known to play "Red House", so I think, "Hmm, that has three chords, I could do that" and I say, "Hey, Luke, Biff, let's burn up 'Red House' to get things rolling" and we figure out a key and we're off.

See? Like that.

Stick with what you know, and the simpler it gets (Jumpin Jack Flash comes to mind), the easier it is to get others involved. For those who were there, think about the song selection by Biff Baby's All Stars in Dallas. That was perfect.

(Bonus points if you can sing like Tony Spinner.)

I'm embarassed to admit I love a good Village People song - looking forward to Jack and Luke bangin' a few out! :p

For the record, I absolutely agree with the two-three song limit - I threw out a longer list to see what sticks (but most of you already knew that!).

And I don't sing... Well I do a little... But not really... Maybe back-up...

If you were at the 1st open house, real late on Friday, and you caught a piece of Tush (figuratively), you know what I mean! ;)

Now where are those geetar players!?

I agree with the 2-3 song limit for performing, but I think it makes sense to throw whatcha know out there to see where the connections are. I emailed a dozen or so. If I get one or two matches out of that I'll be happy.

I'd also suggest some mechanism for hooking up once someone posts a song you want to play.

And of course, we can ALL play Big Bottom!

PM or e-mail each other or e-mail [email protected] directly. I'll tie everything together.

Also, there's only a finite amount of time alloted for the Knucklehead Jam. I'm sure that there are several of you collaborating on songs offline for this but I would ask that you let me know what the outcome is so I can sort of track the time committed. We want to ensure that everyone who wants to get up and jam has the opportunity to do so.

I won't post up that stuff because it gives the jam a "wow, that was cool" factor.

Open question for TNT and SticksNStones....

You guys have got Zep's "Moby Dick" listed. I can play that, but why would we want to? Three quarters of the thing (I checked) is a drum solo. Not even a good drum solo, at that.

Not only that, but there ARE NO VOCALS. What are you thinking of?

We need some more people to step up to the plate here.
