It's all a lie.

He's using one of these, straight into the desk

He'd still sound amazing.

From what I've seen recently is that he mike two 412 cabs backstage, facing backwards.
When he uses his smaller B rig, he has two blue 412 cabs onstage, and both of them are miced.
anyway, he can change his setup not only for every leg of the tour, but even for every show.

Even if he miked the cabs on the back, the ones on the front may not be just for showing off, he might need them for feedback.

So are all 3 heads running 1 2x12?

And why use a 2x12?

im pretty sure the 3 heads are:

-left
-right
-backup

a 2x12 can be a little tighter and more focused than a 4x12
also you have less loudspeakers reproducing the same signal
thus lessening the effects of comb filtering in the microphone signal

I went to the Tower Theatre in Philly last night and John had 2 of the bottom 4x12's mic'ed. His tone was insane. Best rhythm and lead tones I've ever heard coming out of any of his rigs. He used his Tobaccoburst, a Black Burst, a Ruby Burst, the Silver Burst, and the Cherry Burst. No Dargie II for this show.

id be very interested to see his mkV settings! ive found some great tones, but they still sound a bit 'fizzy' when playing solos... not sure why, maybe due to the bedroom volumes.. just doesnt sound smooth... maybe some more fiddling is required..

The heads on top of the cabs are stage props. They have LED's that make them look like they're on, but there are no tubes or transformers in the back. His 3 real ones are off to the side in his rack.

OK, there are 2 schools of thought.

1- He still uses his 6 4x12's and has started to mic a 1x12 combo back stage.

2- He still uses his 6 4x12's and mics them.

What does he do and why???

In my xperience, sometimes I do that thing, I have a very small amp LEEM GA-610d, I use it for practice at home, in the church I use fender twin reverb, but I liked the sound of the Leem than the fender but it's not good for outdoor, so what I did is mic the leem & put it in the back then the sound of it comes out on the stage monitor, then the fender is my main amp...

then it sounds good to me...

Maybe Petrucci is up to something like, he need to do this because he wants to get clean record of his sound for some purpose or maybe he like much the sound if it's placed at the back.. Is there a mystery behind the back?..

Wahaha....

I love Petrucci as much as anyone here, but that is silly. I know that he is endorced by Mesa, but having 4 fake Mark V heads is just plain stupid.
There are lots of guys that use fake cabs on stage. Billy Gibbons has been doing it for many years, etc.

Just part of the deal when you put on a show.
