You know I think that this poster hit me in the right spot....I dont articulate enough how I feel about design based on doing it soooooo long. When the Bongo came out the haters were everywhere and I loved that...It was calculated. The BFR JP was the next most hated product initially....SO when I take exception to someones criticism...its not the criticism that I am taking exception to...it is the manor of criticism...

Just about all of the best initial reactions to stuff we have done has turned out to not sell very well....The most hated or the ones that create the most disruption from both sides are keepers.....

Change is hard for some people to accept! Once they are able to touch, hold and play they will come around. Keep your innovations alive for that is what makes you Big Poppa!

I read something about this kind of psychological reaction with regard to cars as well. In recent times car makers have been designing more radical car designs that are a lot more polarizing - either people love the look or they hate it. (IE Infinity FX-45, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Nissan Murano....etc) But it sure beats a design that is so middle of the road and just boring looking.

I like the radical designs. I always loved the look of the Bongo for instance. Anyway...different strokes I guess but its good to see the passion that goes into it!

BP I was always a fan of the Majesty and when I actually got to play it at NAMM I fell for it hard! It was love at first strum. It felt like I was having an affair on the JPX. She's still not talking to me.

That's quite right BP. When the first solid body electrics came out, nobody liked them. It was a sea change, an evolutionary step that took some time to sink in culturally. I was reading the stuff about the Beatles and all the bad reviews they got, saying they wouldn't amount to much.

A guy might not like EVERY model EBMM makes, but there is bound to be something in the range that suits.

Also, I'd add that if all manufacturers were influenced by what has the greatest mass appeal everyone would just make bland looking crap that is completely uninteresting. Take cars for instance. For the most part, cars all look interchangeable. As a result, I'm not even remotely interested in buying a new car. You guys dare to be different. That's a huge part of what makes your entire business platform work, and consistently so. I love EBMM for that.

That's why I'm "almost" always so indecisive when evaluating new products. I tend to vacillate when trying to reach a verdict of like or dislike, allowing great lengths of hesitation to finalize a position "sometime" down he road.

And, in all honesty I "hate" (I mean love???) just about everything EBMM makes!! Hold on - I'm not sure yet!

So, I guess you gotta ask yourself:

How do you design something with this statement in mind?

I'd guess that your best bet is to design something with your wife or your father :)

Im really glad Craig (I appreciated you thread Craig) posted in this thread as he had posted that we only like great comments here...I wanted to use this as a chance to say that speaking for myself...I expect people to not like things...its how they articulate it... I think that an action gets a reaction and what usually happens is that they are not used to getting a response.

I have no problem wioth " that doesnt do it for me...not my cup of tea...looks funny to me..." never will you see a post from me taking issue with those things...

I like the way you guys did, it's really rare to see a company developing a product not based in a market research. I love to play my jp12 because I know it's exactly the same instrument Petrucci plays and developed. There's no ghost build or sell out try. I agree Majesty is very disrupting but if it's that what Petrucci wants EBMM is following the right direction, I can't wait to try I bet it's a superb instrument, for those not liking you can always buy the past models and stay happy too haha

I know you've said this before, BP, but I still find it completely fascinating, as it runs counter to what I would expect. Nevertheless, your experience over the years speaks volumes.

So does this mean the Majesty will become the next biggest seller for EBMM? :D

I think people over-exaggerate a lot on the Internet too. If they don't like something, they will say "Wow that is the ugliest guitar I've seen on this earth" even if they don't mean it that much. I think people posting things that gets these kind of comments (e.g. EBMM) needs to filter those comments out.

Doing radical things, especially when it comes to products that people are buying, will always attract a lot of attention. Some of it is good, some of it is bad. And the bad tends to be not very constructively put.

Someone posted that "You don't see me walking up to someones baby and saying that it's the ugliest thing in the world" but I think this is a very inaccurate comparison. For one thing, that person is not trying to sell you their baby as is the case with your products. And most importantly; their baby doesn't get nearly as much attention as products from one of the greatest guitar-producer in the world.

So again, we just need to filter out the bad comments. If they feel better by spewing out ill-comments about your products, let them. Does it really matter what they say when you know there will be people who absolutely *adore* your products?
