Are they modded SA's (SA-57's) like in the original Luke 1?
Also, is the neck profile a lot thinner, also like on the original?

According to EMG these are the same pickups as the Luke models from 93-96. We asked for the same spec's as before.

Looks great! Congrats on getting a rare one! I wonder how it compares to the original Luke 1?

Super quick review... This guitar is superb!

So far it feels amazingly similar to what I remember of the original luke 1. Although I have to tell you it's been 8 years since I last played my original. It feels almost spooky to play in a very good way. Eerily cool. Playing songs with the Luke Sledge, (that I had written on the original luke 1), retain all of the original idiosyncracies that the original Luke 1's floating bridge introduce into the sounds. Brings a smile to my face!

It is just like I remember, with one possible exception/improvement. If I am not mistaken the Sledge luke neck does not have the extremely pronounced V aspect on the back side of neck near the nut. Again it's been 8 years so take that into account. I absolutely love the neck on this guitar, I actually prefer it to what I remember. It is better than what I remember. I've been playing an axis for the last 8 years and the transition from axis to the Sledge Luke 1 neck is effortless.

The bridge is definitely as amazing as I remember, if not better. It is effortless to achieve shimmery tremolo affects, and it does the incredible stutter effect after abrupt inputs and then allowing it to settle on it own.. There is Nothing that I do not like about this guitar. Extreme note bends in the upper fret register are done with ease.

Pups sound great, although I have not played them at beyond bedroom levels yet, but they sound like I remember.
I couldn't be happier with the guitar.

The only thing I need to do is lower the bridge and set the action to my specs.

1 quick question for luke 1 users:

Am I correct in that I can just lower it with the two large bridge allen set screws? I haven't had a true floating bridge in a while so any info on this is appreciated. I assume I would have to

1: Reduce tension on the bridge by loosening the strings,
2: Adjust set screws lowering bridge towards guitar body
3: Re-tighten strings
4: Adjust truss rod to taste.

Please let me know if this is not the correct procedure.

Wow! That's sure is pretty!

Lowering action: Try adjusting the truss rod first to see if it gives you the action you want. Also, might look if the nut has a shim.

If not, do the procedure you listed. I'd take the extra step and move the trem away from the posts so the fulcrum edge doesn't touch the posts when you are adjusting them.

Nice to know someone in the islands owns that axe!

Kimono,

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I bought my original Luke 1 from Dan's guitars and have been searching for another used one there for the last few years with no luck. Now I don't have to search any longer. =)

I'm wondering if it is necessary to loosen strings for a slight truss rod adjustment on a floating bridge? I am inclined to simply push the trem arm and reduce tension that way prior to adjusting it. Thanks again.

NICE! congrats!! Let's see it in the daytime, outside.. :p

Thanks and I'll try and get a good photo up sometime this weekend if the weather and my schedule cooperates.

Cheers,

Tom

I just turn the wheel. Gonna have to retune after even the slightest turn anyway :)

I actually had one of Dan's personal Luke I's back when they came out. It was my favorite guitar, but I had to sell it to pay the down for a house. It's OK though because my buddy Ben owns it now and I have another Luke I... well I have too many Lukes!

Kimono,

You saved me a huge hassle with the bridge, 1/4 inch turn of the truss rod wheel and I am golden. The action is to-die-for. Plays like butter now.

btw...I don't think you can ever have too many Lukes =)
Thanks a bunch.

Cheers,

Tom
