Yeh yeh - DO TELL! :D Is it worth the money for a 50 watter?

Well, actually I find it a bit expensive for what it is.
As far as I could see (but the knobs were piloted by the dealer while I was playing), there are 2 controls : 1 volume, 1 tone. Nothing else.
The volume delivered is stunning, not compared to the rated wattage, but to the size of the box. It is _really_ tiny (basically a tube of less than 9" per side). And related to this, yes the power is impressive.
The general tone did not impress me that much, though. The full range is clean, but there is an obvious lack of presence, due to the concept of the combo itself.
Could be a good bass amp for street music, but unfortunately it does not work on batteries.... :(

Hope this helps
Jay

BTW, please can someone here try to check the TA503 head and the Standard 152HR cab ? I'm looking for something that sounds half-vintage half-modern, somewhere between Ampeg SVT and GK / SWR...

Many thanks if someone can check this.

Report: Live from GC Hollywood

Okay,

Since I was the only one from the forum at the event I will do my best to answer any of the questions you all have. So, if I don't touch on something, let me know, and I'll do my best to recollect what was said.

First, I met Ed Ocean as well as Peter Murray who actually introduced the products. As of now, the complete line of MarkBass products are not available in the US. What was presented were the Standard 151HF, Standard 106HF, Standrad 104HF, CMD 102P, Mini CMD121P and the TA-501, SD-800 and Little Mark II amps. The plan is to gradually bring in more of the line over time. There is also an All-Tube amplifier in development as well, which is said to be killer!

Also, an acoustic line is in the future which will be for acoustic guitar as well as upright bass.

The three main points of presentation were: Sound, Weight, and Value. They obviously sounded incredible. A 30th Anniversary Mahagony Stingray was used for demonstration. Let me just say that Mark Bass and MusicMan are going to have a beautiful relationship because I have never heard my Stingray sound so good. The main features discussed were the Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator, and the Variable Pre-Shape Filter which definitely raises the WOW factor, even though the amps sounded great with a flat EQ. I took a liking to the VPF in particular, as I am a slapper, and it was so easy to dial into the MusicMan slap sound that I was looking for. And, of course a combination of both features is even better.

Weight: They basically used the technology that has already been out in other industries. Marco (the founder) is an engineer with a background in telecommunications, so many of the elements of that industry was used in the development of the amps with regards to the intricate circuitry involved. This technology happens to be a lot lighter than what has been used in the bass world.

Value: "Boutique" bass amp quality at the affordablility level of most players. They set out to raise the standard of amplifiers and cabinets available to the masses and they are succeeding if I do say so myself!

As I type, they are filming a demo video with Peter Murray in the Bass area of the Hollywood GC. I had to leave to give you all a taste of what's ahead and what's coming to a GC near you. I learned so much that it would be better if you guys ask me questions and I do my best to answer. There was so much info thrown our way.

However, I would like to mention that I am the owner of the SD-800 being used in the demo video that they are filming. They only had two left, the demo and one in a box in the back, and the boxed one was sold the same time as mine.

P.S. I had no idea that Marco was the brain behind the Ernie Ball Audiophile amp line. That was a surprising tidbit that I didn't know. So, the two companies have had a relationship for a while now.:)

What a great report many folks here will love too hear that, The Audiophile is what really had me interested about Marco from the git go. I thought he did an incredible job on those, then after Namm seeing MarkBass i knew i had to get one.

Mr Light, thanks for your report. How would you describe the response of the 104HF cab ? Thanks.

The best response in a cabinet I have ever had so far. Especially coming from an Ampeg SVT 410HLF, I can honestly say that there is very little to contest with the MK, especially when you factor in the weight aspect.

I was particularly keen to the fact that it is a front reflex cab just like my Ampeg and that I wanted to retain that bottom that I've loved Ampeg for that you don't get with something like a Goliath III or another rear reflex on the market. The MarkBass cab is a LOUD cab. This Sunday (church gig), I will certainly found out just how loud it can get! I will report more then, because that will be the ultimate Pass/Fail test in my book.

Many thanks for your fast and accurate reply, Mr Light. :)

Anytime...

It's been a long time since I've felt this good about my choice in gear. And like EBMM, I believe in these guys just as much.

hehe... I was there too, but came late (cuz I work on "Korean Time" and LA traffic :p) and stayed just outside the bass room. I was the little asian kid who was trying out the SRs there afterwards, attempting to groove. That was some nice Mark King, man! :D

Ha! That is too funny! I remember! You should have said "Hi!"

As for the Mark King, thanks. I love Level 42! The old lineup, that is...

So i've been a GK player for near a year now and have been wowed by my amp every time I turn it on. This Mark Bass stuff has me itching though. I think I may head up to GC soon and try out one of the heads. Wish me luck! :D
