Hey guys,

I have 2 EBMM stingray basses, an older 4 string and a newer 5 string, both with a H pickup. The 4 string has 2 band eq, and i don't really like it. If the pots are on 0, the sound is thin, but if i crank'em high, the bass sounds so fat and bright, but don't have healthy midrange. The 5 strings 3 band eq is great. sounds fantastic!

I've ordered a seymour duncan replacement eq and pickup, i think it'll be ok. My question is: nowdays classic stingrays and other 2 band eq basses has the same preamp or it's different than a 1993 stingrays eq?

Cheers,

Sexy from Hungary

Hey 666,

my understanding is that the new 2 band EQ and is based on the old 2 band EQ and I completely agree with you on the fact that with the EQ pots on 0 it sounds thin and it lacks mids when the pots are flat out.

Can I suggest you grab yourself an allen key and take the knobs off those 2 EQ pots, then find the middle of the rotation of them and replace the pots with the allen key slot facing up towards you when the bass is in your usual playing position. This will give you a very similar sound to your SR5 3 EQ with the pots in the centre indent.

It took me a week of gigs to get comfortable with my 2EQ but I prefer it now, for my ears there is a more musical quality to the sound of the 2EQ over the 3EQ.

I now set my bass sound so I have a great modern sound with the 2EQ controls in the middle and roll the Highs off to 0 for an old school finger sound.

PS. I buy your EQ2 pre and Pots if you decide you'd prefer the 3 EQ :)

You think, they sound flat at the middle point? i don't think so :)

I've ordered an STC 3m3 3 band eq from S. Duncan, it will replace the stock electronics, but i don't want to sell em, because later i can change my mind.

Active 3-Band Tone Circuits for Music Man® STC-3M3 & STC-3M4 - Seymour Duncan Electronics

it fits the cavity, comes with stacked bass/treb pot, standalone mid pot and a master vol, with p/p slap switch!
And a new alnico replacement pickup comes too :)

Do you know anything about the classic series? Sounds the same way? Even on the 5 string version?
I want to order a new bass soon, and i really like the classic 5 string stingray.

The 2EQ is the same as your 1993 Bass and has been the same since the Pre-EB days. The only change has been the circuit board layout/shapes and the addition of a protection resistor toprevent the IC being zapped.

That Duncan system seems by your description to be the same
one that came with a used SR4 FL that I've had for 10 yrs. I
never knew about the push-pull switch until last week ! In the
"parked" [push] position, it was always a great fretless ax, but
I decided to put its FL neck on a different body, cuz the other
body has a piezo [thus it BEGGED for an FL neck ... ].

So ...... the fretted neck from the piezo body landed on the
old SR4 with the Duncan system, and what had been a GREAT
FL tone became a krazy klanky fretted ax, that I was gonna
sell to some slapper who would value the ultra brite tone. BUT,
I was removing the black control knobs so as to cleanse them
of the color coded paint dots that mark two different tonality
presets for my use ... AND ... in the process of removing the
knobs, I discovered the push-pull control :)

The "pull" position reminds me of the OMFG mode on an old G&L
[a monster bass boost mode] and so I decided to keep this ax
after all, altho I'll never play it in the "push" position. BTW, the
discovery of the P-P switch prodded me to look for other cool
sooprizes, and so I popped the hood, and found a pair trim pots
on the circuit board. The OMFG mode that now results from the
"pull" position is mostly created by twirling those trim pots til I
got a Very Emphatic Result ;-)

I dunno which SD PU you ordered, but mine is the ceramic, as I
bought this bass, with the SD system installed, so long ago that
SD had not yet offered an alnico version. Perhaps with an alnico
PU, I might even use the "push" position ... but I'll never know.

Anywho, I do expect you'll hugely enjoy your hot rod MM.

666 Regarding the new Classic SR5,

I'm sure they have the same sounding pre-amp sound and set up and your 2EQ SR4.

The major differences are that the Classic have a Slab body (no Belly or Arm contours), Thru body stringing, Figured maple necks, Limited run colours, Mutes, Lacquered Necks (rather that the standard oiled) and Old School Neck profile, Small fret wire, Old school straight nut and that same pesky 2EQ Pre-Amp.

By the way 666, I love my Classic SR5 :)

Thank you for your answers, man!
Now i know great things about classic series :)

i've ordered the alnico magnet type pickup, because i like it much more. I've had a sterling, about 2 years ago, and i didn't liked the sound of the pickup, cause it was a ceramic one. I've ordered a 3 coil seymour alnico replacement and boooom. sound is opened up and i liked it so much! then i decided to apply as an WW endorser, i've sold all my other brand basses and now, i've got the hungarian mm endorsement :D so, that's why i'm back to mm now! I love my sr5 and my sr4, and i think, next stop will be a bongo 5 hs. then a sterling 5 and later a classic sr5. :D

good to be in a "family" like yours, thank you guys!
