If you don't like the sound of the MM pickup, just buy a different bass. But don't swap out the original pickup. Then it's not really a Music Man, is it?

chill out guys ... i agree with what you mean but there's a bunch of other reasons to play an MM besided the PUP.

- you like how the neck feels (esp on a sterling ;))
- it looks cool
- yada
- yada

I wouldnt swap the pup, but hey, the pup's not the ONLY reason to play an MM

Please don't add weight as a reason to play a MM. Them things are heavvvvvy!

Rod---I wrote to Ernie Ball several times on this topic. Wish they gave me the info you just gave me. They did not. I am not too keen on the Seymore Duncan replacement I got. Sounds like I am playing through a pillow. Muffled, not clear. Thatnks for the part number. Maybe I'll try Ernie Ball's replacement---when I get over having spent my money on the Seymore.

EDIT: Sorry--I thought we were randomly posting nouns. ;) :p :D

:D :D

No I was, in a cryptic way, suggesting he put the pup on eBay to recoup at least some of his cost.

I don't know what pickups you guys have been playing but I've had stock pre EB, Seymore Duncan and Bart MM pickups on my basses.

I like the stock Pre EB and Seymore Duncan pickups equally - but make sure you have the matching preamps. Don't mix and match, the preamps are all tailored to the pickups.

The Seymore is punchy and growly. The pre EB is fat and mellow. Both really nice. I didn't like the Bart preamp + MM p/up at all - very brittle and aggressive sounding through my Eden amp. Although it seemed to get cut back and warmed by my all valve Burmans nicely - valve heads and stingrays are a great combination IMHO.

why are you guys busting balls about wanting to replace a pickup? if you can't say anything helpful, you really shouldn't post at all.

there are other things about a stingray which contribute to its tone, and that is probably why other people and I have bought the stingray. for example, the preamp, the body, placement of the pickup, the neck, etc. i'm sure i don't need to tell you what it is that contributes to tone and the feel of the bass.

i happen to appreciate this info and the thread. it's something i would try if i had money.

I'm lost on that. Whats the relevance of a thread's age? Would it be better to start another one on the same topic?

Simple. Everything said in the last few postings has already been said months ago - and in hundreds of other threads on the same topic.

This dog won't hunt... Dead horse... Same 'ole can of worms...

That kinda thing.

With respect, I didn't make my contribution months ago and I've since recieved offline emails from other forum members requesting more information about my experiences! Based on that, it doesn't look like the topic is old at all to me, my friend.

Would you like to discourage other members from posting on subjects they find interesting and relevant?

Honestly? Yes.

Not on just "any" subject, but this one. The mods have tried to promote searching age old subjects that keep getting hashed over and over and over and over and over as with this one.

See this thread for info:

I'm not trying to break your balls, or push you around. It's just that this has been done so many times with the same opinions and results each time.

Thats sad to hear and seems a little counterproductive to me. Its the nature of these forums that people will 'shoot' questions first and bother to search second. I understand how you feel of course but there may always be someone who can make new comparisons.

For example, Delano (www.delano.de) who are based in Germany make some extremely good very fat sounding mm pickups - in fact, they make FOUR different types of four, SEVEN types of five string MM humbucker and even offer a 6-string MM humbucker! If someone was able to make A/B comparisons on these, wouldn't that be of interest and relevance?

I'm a moderator on www.bassworld.co.uk and we have the same issues. For dealing with that, we make "stickies" which other people can still contribute to if they have something relevant.

Have you got the ability here to combine the pickup comparison topics together and make them a permenantly top-of-forum topic (a 'sticky')? That way they can be easily found by newbies and you can refer to them whenever someone asks?

I don't have the ability to do so. Maybe one of the mods will find it necessary.

Perhaps an explanation could be put in the faq as to why it's inappropriate to ask for comparisons with other manufacturers' pickups on this forum?

You wouldn't expect to be able to ask questions about, say, Dimarzio's pickups on Seymour Duncan's forum, would you?

I agree. That was part of the reason I was saying to just drop it.
