Hey BP, I'm always up for having fun discussing necks and pickups and other tweaks to the basses if everyone else is. :) Bassworld/Basschat is dead and the database has been deleted.

PS: the server seems awful busy these days.

Yeah some people actually have fun here! Stick around and give it another chance....

Reading between the lines of the above you really need to understand that this is a corporate forum so expect that it will be focused on EB/MM and if it drifts we will do something about it. If you disagree, fine, there are other forums to talk about anything. I would respectfully ask that if you disagree that we can agree to disagree and not get personal like you did last time.

Deal?

Sterling, its your forum. Nuff said on that.

Like others, I made the mistake of assuming that this forum would welcome discussion on all Musicman basses and you'd see that holistically as being something in the company's favour.

For what its worth, if others want to post more widely on the topic of Musicman basses than you're comfortable with, I'm happy to accommodate them on my forum. The way I see it, we both end up winners. Same goes for my own contributions too.

BTW: I've also said good stuff about you in the past as well - particularly on how your company set a great example in switching to linux. I guess that was a while ago and didn't reach you.

There's not much chance of me hanging around unfortunately when its taking 25 mins for the server to let me in.

I can't see a reason to change my pickup - it sounds fantastic as CK said. The only thing I want is another one ! I will have a HH one day..

Basschat may be a more suitable place for more open discussion - especially if it is 3rd party hardware.

Of course if Big Poppa would be happy with that is a different question.

Bartolinis are for girls.

No, seriously - they are. I find them too warm and nice and polite.

Keep the stock pickup(s). There are many other ways to get what you want out of your bass - change your strings or your cabinets, for instance, although strings are much cheaper - but the sound of your bass is in the pickup that came with it.

YMMV, etc.

Jack

Polite? Does this mean MM's are rude? I think not... a tad aggressive, but certainly well behaved

>>>>I was told Ernie Ball doesn't make replacements for pre EB Musicman basses

EB does make a replacement pre-amp for the Pre-EB Basses. Part number is "M0 5400". It's a replica except for the inclusion of a protection resistor which was a 1982 MM modification anyway. The 4250 IC chip has a tendency to get zapped if the guitar lead is short circuited. It's not sealed in epoxy like the early originals. I recently bought one. EB requires the return of the old pre-amp when purchasing the replacement.

Darren...I've just bought a Nordstrand. Looks really well made. I'm lucky enough to also have a spare 1978 black epoxy. I'm in the process of doing a retro my 1989 'Ray.

Is there any differences between the early EB PUPS and the Pre-EB PUPS with regards to impedance and resistance...or are they interchangable???

P.S. I have a copy of the 1982 circuit mod if anyone needs it for their Pre-EB Bass.

.

Rod

Could you pass on details of how to order the replacement pre-amp M0 5400 and the approximate cost. Have emailed [email protected] but no response as yet.

Thanks

It's the weekend. They will respond to your email...trust me.

The pre-amps can be ordered direct from Ernie Ball's customer service if you live in the US. About $50-60 (from memory) but you have to hand in your old one at the same time. If you live outside the US then you have to go through your local Music Man deealer.
