Hey Danny.

Records of Pre-EB Bass serials don't exist.

A given serial number can usually give an idea as to vintage but serials aren't necessarily in chronological order.

All that can be said at this stage is that your Bass is probably a 1979 or 1980.

Other features of the instrument may be helpful. For example, a 4 bolt neck may suggest 1980 rather than 1979. Similarly, a top-load bridge (strings don't go through the body) may suggest 1980 rather than 1979. However, the 3 bolt neck and and string-through-body bridge extended into 1980 also.

Unfortunately, the only way to accurately date your Bass is to remove the neck in order to view the dates on both the neck heel and in the body pocket.

If you choose to remove the neck then I strongly suggest you have a luthier do it for you as you may damage the instrument.

Rod T., it's a 3-bolt w/ Micro Tilt, strings thru body, chrome dome knobs, black guard... now that you mention it, am pretty sure I removed the neck once many years ago and saw a date in the neck pocket and another date on the heel.
I was wondering about an assembly date and was unaware that there were no records pre-EB... interesting...
I'll be careful... ;)
Will try to post some pix soon too...
thanks, danny

Thanks

Hey Pernacchio, congratulations on your new StingRay and welcome to the Forum! Your baby was completed on 01/31/06.

Hi Pernacchio. The Ernie Ball Basses are definitely made in San Luis Obispo California.

Gav is 100% correct, the Ernie Ball Music Man factory has always been in San Luis Obispo, Ca. We have no other factories. I can hear the mill running and smell the paint from my cubicle sometimes! What a lovely treat for the senses! ........:p :p :p ;) "I love the small of polyester clearcoat in the morning!" Ahhhh ...... then there's Woodstock's Pizza in downtown SLO .. another treat for the senses, absolutely!

fffonck, welcome! Your bass was completed on 3/21/06. It is a StingRay HS in black with a white pickguard no? Originally shipped to our honorable French distributor, Hi Tech. ;)

Chris, this one's practically vintage. 10/13/87 is the production date of your bass. The records show it to be a 2-band EQ in Natural Ash. The pickup would be a standard StingRay "same as it ever was" and the neck maple with a rosewood fretboard. Nice!

Cheers,

Dan

wow, thanks.
so youd say its a good bass... just from its specs, year, etc?
