EBMM Sterling H/S. Serial Number: F18668

Just adopted her. She's looking for any trace of her origins. Especially date of conception :D

And here's another.

Serial number on the bridge is 54064 (no letter that I could find).

I have some pics posted here if it helps:

http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-basses/30302-help-me-date-bass-value.html#post476703

Bass is a Stingray 5 fretless. Finish is a translucent dark red/burgundy with flat black pick guard.

Seller told me it was 1992 or 1993.

Can you help me with when it was made, where it shipped and what wood used for neck and fretboard? Really beautiful bass!!

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Dan I went to the local dealer for strings and they demanded I take this F19782 with me when I left and I couldn't refuse. What the heck is it and when was it built ? :D

These early instruments are not on EB's data base. It could be 1986 but I think it would be more like 1985. I'm pretty sure the "Made in USA" was gone from the neck plate by 1986. Dates are located in the body pocket and on the neck heel but the neck has to be removed to view them. There's probably no need to go to that extent.

Rod/Gav,

thanks for the info. I have often wondered what the date was for this bass, but hate taking the neck off unless I have to.

Any chance you can tell me about the electronics in this bass? Specifically would you guess that the small switch was stock, or was this added? I have struggled to understand exactly what it does... Over and over I have been told that it is an Active/Passive switch, but I have a tough time believing that as the difference in sound is negligible.

Any information you might have about how these electronics were set up originally would be a great help to me.

Thanks again!!

Hi Jim.

The switch is a mod. It could be an active/passive setup but my guess is that it's used so the pickup coils can be connected in series rather than the normal parallel. It's probably inoperative if you can't detect any differences.

Your pre-amp should be electrically the same as found in all other two bander SR4s (Pre-EB and Ernie Ball). The battery only powers the pre-amp. The pickup is passive. As the circuit boards changed shape around 1990, yours should have a rectangular board while the latter ones are shaped like a crescent moon.
