Rod, you look to be right. I opened it up (I think for the first time since I bought it!?!) and it appears there had been some work done. When I put it back together and tried it out all of a sudden I could hear a difference with the switch. It seems to either cut highs when it is down or boost them when it is up....

Thanks for the pics Jim.

You could very well have a loose wire there!

Thanks 5stringer. You say it's pre eb, yet on the headstock it says San Luis Obispo, which I thought was the eb address. Maybe the neck is a replacement  anyway, thanks for your help,

Hi I live in uk I recently got myself a mm stingray. Not sure if it's pre ernie ball, serial is B027126. I also heard Duff McKagen owned it before. It has a dark natural finish and a 1 piece birds eye maple neck. I took the neck off to see the date stamp. Can't make out if it says 1980 or 1988. I can see that it says 7th december. Can anyone out there help me to id it? Thanks:cool:

Hi Dan.

Your Serial number is consistent with 1988 which will make it an Ernie Ball Bass. The body should have a cut-away waist contour on the rear (Pre-EB Rays have slab bodies). As the EB Basses were made in San Luis Obispo (as your rear decal purports), the neck would seem original. The string retainer should be on the A&D Strings (it's on the D&G for Pre-EB Basses). Rear headstock decals appeared for the first time at the end of 1987 which would also confirm that your Bass is 1988.

Is the date on the neck or the body?

Any pics? It would be nice to see this Bass

P.S. As with your Bass, the Pre-EB serial numbering system ("B0xxxxx") was used on some of the early EB Basses.

My "new" Stingray has the serial number 33159 on the bridge, which would seem to make it circa '91 or early '92 by looking at the database. Can EB provide a DOB or do I have to pull the neck and take a look?

r - our database confirms that your bass was made on June 16 1991. No need to pull the neck off! It also confirms the Vintage Sunburst finish, maple neck, and 3-band EQ. Interesting side note - this bass was originally sent to Japan via our Japanese distributor, Kanda Shokai.

Nice bass! It looks to be in beautiful mint condition.

Dan, I didn't realize the neck said San Luis Obispo, but that does make sense. What Gav reports is the best info we will have as the earliest Ernie Ball Music Man records have been lost. Our database is pretty sketchy up until 1990 or so.

Hi. Thanks for your help guys. The date is on the body. I can't check the other stuff right now because the bass is with a friend who is cleaning it up and fixing the electronics. When I get it back I'll send some photos. I guess if it's 1988 then Duff McKagen probably didn't own it. I know he did use mm in the early days. Anyway, I'll email some pics when I can. Thanks again,

Dan

Mr. Soul, your Sterling left the factory on 8/05/98 on its way to GC in central Chicago. The finish is Sunburst (now called Honeyburst).

All reet!

Carl...Look for signs of other colours in the routing for the pre-amp or pickups. Another place to check is in the neck pocket but the neck has to be removed. My guess is that you have one of those limited colours.

Hi Gav/Dan/All,

I finally broke down and checked the routings under everything and found no evidence of overspray or other finishes. Not satisfied with that, I took off the neck and only discovered an ink stamp on the body of "Jan 08 1987" and another on the neck, "Sept 10 1986". There was also a large "B" stamped on the inside of the neck without ink (I was hoping for some information regarding the finish).

At the neck pocket, there is a slight indication of some undercoating in black, but it looks like everything is completely OEM from what I can tell. Was a primer used on the body for certain colors at the time? If you or anyone else can offer further information on this, it would be greatly appreciated!!! Hi guys,

I can't find the date of this 2007 LE SR4 elsewhere on the web, so please advise the build date of E42687.

YES>>> I can guess it was made in 2007, but I want to know the month/day so I can start planning the 1st BDay party!

Thanks!

Hi All,

Here is my EBMM: Sterling 4 string with matching headstock. Serial number F01743. I would love to know her birthday. I bought her used but I swear the person never even took her out of it's case.

Did you take a pic of the neck pocket? If so, send it over. I'll host it so we can have a look.

Hi Oli.

There is no data base for the Pre-EB Sting Rays. Looking at my lists I would have to say 1979 or maybe 1980. Definitely a 1979 if it has the older output jack (without switch). However, the newer black jack (with switch) doesn't necessarily rule out 1979. Dates are located on the neck heel and in the neck pocket.

[ BTW...your pic of the two 100th Anni NAMM Basses is now my desktop background  ]

I also have a new (to me) Desert Gold Sterling I'd like to know the year it was made. The serial number is F10737 on the neck plate. Thanks!
