It's complicated. It can't be explained in short form. All I can suggest is that you go:

Gav: would you like a pic of my bridge for your pages? I noticed that there are no pics of the downsized bridge that have a non-prefixed serial above.

In relation the serial prefixing, the main thing is pinpointing a not-before date. Eg, the serial became prefixed with an "E" (and moved to the neck plate) in 1998. A non-prefixed serial on the bridge indicates a Bass before 1998. But, with most things there's exceptions...eg "A" "B" and "D" prefixes. And with the "B" there's even more exceptions.

P.S. The issue of serials is only concerned with dating an instrument.
