It was about the end of July 1994 that I was back in Belgium after a 3 week vacation in France or Spain. During the vacation I broke a bridge saddle from the Floyd Rose of My Fernandes. (a good guitar, but not expensive...) I went to a big music store in Deinze, Belgium to buy another bridge saddle (about 5$) but when I entered the shop it was like I was glued on the ground and I could only say th...the...there.... :eek: My wife immediately saw that the situation was serious...
Just in front of us we saw a beautiful Ernie Ball Natural Quilt. At that moment the guitar was already not easy to find in Belgium...
When you go to the store to buy a 5$ bridge saddle you are not ready to spend big money, but guess what my wife proposed me... Buy the thing or it will take weeks before you can sleep again... :D Ofcourse I could not agree more...;)
From that day she's my precious... (heh, they're both, :-) my wife and the Ernie...) :)

Can you tell me the DOB of my Stingray 5 and what the body wood is and what the sunburst color is called? It has a rosewood board and is 50716. Thanks for any help.

Hornet, your StingRay 5 was built on 6/12/89 and shipped to a dealer called Hewgleys of Nashville, now out of business.

The finish we called simply Sunburst at that time. The body wood is southern ash. The neck of course is maple and the fretbord is rosewood.

Nice piece!

hi dan,

i just bought my first stingray5 from a friend. its serial is 55048. can you tell me more about it:
1.its finish is kinda different. its like sky blue burst. what do you call its finish?
2.it has maple neck and fretboard. whats the wood for the body?its 2 pcs.
3.whats the pickup magnet and whats the differnce between alnico and ferrite?
4.when was it completed and where was it shipped?
5. is it registered. if not i'd like to regeister it.
6. tell me more that i dont know about this bass. thanks

This is an interesting bass. Its finish is simply called Blueburst. We used to offer it on StingRay and StingRay 5 models the same way we still do on the Steve Morse model guitar. And like the Morse, the wood we used was poplar, while the pickguard assembly would have been white. The birthdate of your bass is 4/21/94 and it was originally shipped to Japan. Are you in the U.S.?

The electronics are virtually the same we use today - ferrite (ceramic) magnet pole pieces, phantom coil and electronics to accommodate. By 1992, the StingRay 5 was pretty much established and has remained pretty much unchanged since then. This color was discontinued later in 1994.

Alnico magnets, as we still use on the StingRay, are generally considered a more "aggressive" sound, while ferrite is deemed to be "smoother", though that is very subjective. The inherent problem, though, seems to be that alnico is noisy and more difficult to keep quiet. Once the decision was made to have a single-coil position available as part of the 3-way switching system, it became obvious that alnico just wouldn't work as well as ferrite for the pole piece material due to the noise factor.

why do you call it an intresting bass? youre right! cause this bass was bought in japan. why do you ask if im from u.s.a? im from asia .philippines to be exact. yup, the pickguard assemly is white. i used to have a pre- ernieball stingray. it was very heavy. thats why i sold it. shoulder pains. thats why my stingray 5 is kinda light, becuase of the poplar body.
your right about the ceramic and alnico magent noise issue. the pre ernieball musicman was very noisy. my stingray5 now is very quiet. no noise.
thanks so vey much for the info dan. it was very helpful. im the type of bassist who likes to know more about the gear that i use. i'll post a pic of it soon as i get a shot of it

t, anyone who ordered anything from EBMM before 1998 will remember that at one time our backorder lead time swelled to over 14 months. Since we built the new factory, there hasn't been that kind of lead time, but there is still sometimes more than we would like, especially if the instrument is a limited edition or anniversary or some other model we haven't done before. Currently, our lead time is 5-6 months on any new orders.
