I'll take my Stingray's Family History please. :D

Stingray 4 3EQ Blue Dawn purchased in 2001 from Guitar Center Hollywood.
E26189

Also, if you could tell me the body wood, that would be great, I believe it's Ash, but have read some were Alder?

Thanks in advance!

Hey, you're right (of course). It did come from Thoroughbred but I stick a Paragon Music sticker on the case for some reason.

Perhaps a Bongo next...

Hey Wonky, you lived in Tampa for a while? I remember going to Thoroughbred as a kid a staring at the wall of basses back in the day. Nothing like them Sting Rays, aye?

Hi all.

New to the forum and I was directed here for this question.

I have an early 90's MM stingray 4 string, black w/ maple, treble/bass control.

I am trying to find the build date without having to remove the neck..as well as destination and any other info. My parents got me this bass new when I was 13 and I can't remember from which music store or the exact year of the bass..somewhere down in South Florida.

The serial # on the bridge is 32104

Any info is greatly appreciated...thanks in advance.

Hi All

I'm new to this forum as well. I've recently inherited a black Stingray after a good friend of mine passed away. It was his workhorse bass and has quite a battered body but the neck, frets and hardware are in good condition and it has a wonderful tone and playability. It is missing the string damper assemblies and allen keys but is otherwise complete and original and looks great as it is so I don't plan to get it refinished. I have no info on it but I think it was bought new in the UK about 20 years ago. The s/n on the bridge is 26955. Any information on this bass would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Steve.

Steve, welcome to you as well! Your bass is showing up as a 2-band EQ Translucemt Red (probably was re-painted black) with a rosewood board - built on 3/3/88 and it was originally shipped to the U.K. to our distributor there.

Cheers to all!

Thanks a bunch Dan, you told me what I wanted to know. I am still curious how it ended up in a music store in South Florida from MO (I believe it was purchased as "new" in Fla..but maybe it wasn't "brand" new... Another possbility is that Ed's had a Fla. location..but if they are OOB it might be tough to find out. Perhaps if I really dig around I can find the original reciept..that would be cool..

Plus, it has been 18 years ... may be hard to find out, it could be that it was sold "sideways" from dealer to dealer - it's been known to happen ....

Definately possible. I just remember I showed my parents a pic of Flea playing his black 4 string MM Stingray and said "that's the one I want".

And I was (and am) extremely fortunate they got it for me. But now that I am all grown up (kind of lol) I appreciate it even more...as now they don't buy me gifts like that anymore, I have to fork it out.

Thanks again, you guys are all a great help and LOVE the bass.

Many thanks for that Dan. Did guitars sometimes get repainted at the factory? According to a friend who saw it when it was new it has always been black.

Thanks again, Steve

Steve,
Have you re-checked the serial number. It is sometimes hard to see because the digits are sort of hidden behind the screws/springs. Otherwise - there are a few possibilities: - the bridge/body may have been swapped for reasons unknown, or our records are off - that is very seldom the case but that long ago there could have been an entry error, since the info was transferred from the old database to the new by hand-key.

Hi Dan,

Yes the serial no. is correct so It's a bit of a mystery. I'll ask around and see what I can find out. I might be able to find the original sales receipt.

Cheers, Steve.

Kai, Welcome to the Forum! Your Trans Blue StingRay 5/rosewood was built on Nov 1 1988 and was shipped to Musik Meyer, our German distributor. The body is poplar, the pickguard and pickup should be white. This was built during the original period when we were still using Alnico magnets and before we dreamed up the phantom coil. Earlier this year we switched back to Alnico after some 17 years of using Ferrite (ceramic) magnets in the pickup.

A collector's piece for sure!
