I play a Music Man Sterling HS through a Gallien-Kreuger 1001RB head and a G/K 212 bottom. the problem that I am having, is that I am not used to playing with active pickups and just can't seem to get the sound I want under control, meaning I either get way to many highs or not enough and the guitar seems to be pretty wild. any suggestions?

Start with backing the tweeter output level down to about 8 o'clock with the EQ flat on the amp and the Sterling. I would also start with the presence and contour at 0 until you get within range of what you like. Mine seemed to sound better with the woofer output at about 2 or 3 o'clock and then bringing the input level up until you get the volume where you want it.

Disclaimer...this is only an opinion formed by less than 1 month with a GK 1001/212 combo. I then came to my senses and got some Markbass.

It might be the cab you're using. Just wondering - what made you decide to pick it?

Assuming you've played with the EQ and still haven't found the right sound, it sounds like the equipment you're using isn't doing what you want it to do. This leaves two choices - change your amp or change your cab. I own that same amp and recently changed from a Ampeg 4x10 cab (SVT410HLF, 4 ohms, ported) to the GK 4x10 cab (410RBH, 8 ohms, sealed). The difference was pretty huge (I can go into the details if you want, but it doesn't seem necessary to the subject at hand). But that little equipment change made all the difference to me.

What exactly about the sound you're getting isn't working for you? 12' speakers can sound less punchy than 10' speakers. There are a lot of variables at hand.

You'll get a lot of good advice from this forum, but unfortunately the only real way to find the right sound for you is to play every amp and cab under the sun. Hopefully, though, we can point you in the right direction.

I have that same setup for the moment on my small rig as well. That is, only until I can get the Markbass swap done. It is a more aggressive sound, back down the treble and upper mid and see if that helps. Make sure you do not have the boost engaged.

I too have the same setup, cept with a Stingray H/S.

It's still new to me, and I have to admit I don't have it quite down yet. But I have learned that absolutely any sound you want is there - just have to treat it a bit more radically than other amps. With all things set flat the 2 together seem to put out just a bit too much of everything. Not sure why.

What I've been doing is putting the boost up to 3:00, keeping the tweeter off completely, using only a drop of contour if any, and doing crazy things with the mids till it sounds right depending on the venue. Couldn't say what my settings are exactly (don't remember) but I know I've eq'd it with knobs in places I've never put them on other amps. Treble at 9:00, mids at 3 and 9, etc.

I also bought another 2X12s, and backline 600 head. The 1001 with 4X12s packs a huge punch and is at the same time a lot more easy to tame. The Backline 600 sounds great through the 2X12. It seems at the moment easier to handle than the 1001. I think I like the simplicity. Don't have to go nuts with the EQs either.

Fiddle around and let us know what you come up. And I wouldn't go trading it in all that quickly - I've tried lots and lots of other stuff and still like GK the best.

The 1001 is a great head (I love my 2001). The basics are simple, set everything flat and eq in small increments until you find what you need. Be careful with the tweeter and woofer knobs. If you are having high end problems back off the tweeter first . Also, like Joe said use the contour knob sparingly until you get the hang of it. The sound you want is there it will just take some time.

Here's one thing to consider. Don't follow the trend like alot of people have done.

It took me a little bit to get the sound I really wanted out of my GK but now that i've done it, I love it. Like everyone has said, start with everything flat then tweak it to your liking. I'm sure you'll love it. :)

Heard that, me too. I would consider trying Markbass for an in shop spin if one ever shows up significantly closer than 250 miles from my home. I am perfectly happy with my GK stuff right now. ;)

Tried the Markbass stuff and it is great... but so is my current GK stuff so why switch?

If everyone played the same bass through the same rig, it would be pretty boring. ...Can't we all just get along?:)
