I have been waiting for some band to break and get music back to wear it used to be, but I am this close to throwing in the towel. How many guys out there listen to music from artist that are not already established, and does anyone see something or someone on the horizen that seem special and may break big.

I listen to all types of music from Rock,Blues,Metal,Country,Shred,R&B, and Jazz and 99% of it all is at least a decade old.To be honest I have not even listened to the radio in years as I cant take this Hip Hop and fabricated Tween crap that has been ruling the waves for the last decade. The only artist from this decade that I bought new releases from were Keith Urban, Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer and Dragon Force, which shows how I am bouncing. I dropped Mayer and will just leave that alone.lol and Dragon Force who I got from my 17 year old after hearing Through the fire and the Flames which I really dug, but the rest of the CD did not cut it for me.

I am not talking about a great guitarist, because I know just about every players player out there but a band. It is going to take a band that writes strong songs but that has a twist to them to start a movement where other bands will follow as this is really pathetic now. It really struck me how bad things are when I have to see a player the calibre of Nuno Bettencourt being the guitarist for Rianon or however you spell her name ,on American Idol, I almost fell out of my seat.lol

What are most of you guys listening to.

I listen to old stuff!
To be honest I wouldn't expect to be the target audience for musicians 30 years younger than me. I remember my parents bemoaning the Beatles & the Stones as tuneless rubbish and wondering where the next Frankie Laine would come from. I'm no fan of Hip Hop or Pop Idol stuff......but it's too easy to label anything you don't ike as "crap"

With all the crap out their today I’m either blessed or cursed that I don’t listen to much music anymore.

I used to listen in my car and all day at work.

Now, I have neither a car or a job so I only hear music from my iTunes library.

I'll admit I like listening to Nickelback at times.

I hate to break it to you, but there's been nothing new since Schönberg and the few top-tier post-modern composers that came after him- nearly a hundred years ago. Minimalists and Jazz covered anything and everything that was left after that(if you can call that music).
People bitching about "no new music" is as old as music itself. If you expect music to reinvent itself in a matter of a decade or two, you're in for a miserable ride.

::insert argument about electric guitar and something about hendrix::

Given what you listed as the music you listen to, I guarantee there is something out there you would consider "new". I listen to a lot of bands that you've probably never heard of. A lot of them are horrible attempts at polytonal composition, but if you've never heard it, it'd probably be interesting. Some very technical bands out there.

Oh and I guess the age-old retort is: "If you don't like it, fix it yourself." Reinvent the wheel. So on and so forth...

You're welcome.

Aren't we just being a bunch of grumpy old men here? Music isn't dead, what was popular 20 years ago simply isn't popular anymore. As a metal head I hear a lot of great things happening in the underground and several of the young bands throw in references from the past 40 years - I hear references ranging from Sabbath to King Crimson to The Police... Granted, this stuff isn't being played on the radio, but who really cares about mainstream radio anyway?

Cheers

If you want to open your mind, try to listen to World Music.
One of my favorite band is Hedningarna (a Swedish band who play traditional music with a modern touch), especially the albums from the 90's (Kaksi, Trä).

Personally I love Opeth, Alter Bridge, and if you really want to hear old music coming with a new breath, listen to BigElf those guyz are really awesome, and of course there are a lot of underground and very good bands today. Is just a matter of taste, i think.

Forgot to mention. Even thought I haven’t opened my ears to some new music of late.

I’m quite happy with the 46 gigs of music I have on iTunes. :)
From Air Supply to the Sex Pistols. Even got some Nickleback.

Music is like your taste buds....you develop your palate and thats what you like. THere s great music it just isnt live most of the time or at the end cap of Target or Wally World
You Tube is a great source.

Its part of getting older.....not understanding what the youth sees in their music......In twenty years the kids listening to their kids music will tell their kids that music died with Avenged Sevenfold.

I couldn't disagree more ... I think there's more music out there than ever before, you just don't hear it on the radio. If anything, I hear about too many new artists from friends, online, etc. ... it's hard to give them a fair shake to see what I like.

At least for me, the key is to actually take the time to listen to what people say they like with an open mind, so I can see if it's for me.

(This week I started listening to three new artists I hadn't heard before- one mainstream band and two African artists.)

To quote my uncle "I haven't got time to listen to anything new, I haven't finished listening to Big Joe Turner yet!"

I am constantly in search for new music for a variety of reasons. It takes a lot of time to sift through the stuff I don't prefer, but when I find the goods, it brings a smile on my face, and I do what I can to spread the word...

My recommendation for finding your own: Pandora, Rhapsody, iTunes. Search for what you like, and do nothing but listen to the recommended music. Sometimes I get a recommendation from recommendation from etc... Trust me it works!!! I have found 3 or 4 of my most favorite bands this way (plus is keeps you updated with what is out there/coming up).

Here's a jump start (assuming you dig the same music as me):
The Mars Volta (All of it)
Closure in Moscow (First Temple)
Circa Survive (All)
Coheed and Cambria (Good Apollo IV; Volume 1&2)
Arcade Fire (Funural)
Muse
Them Crooked Vultures

Agree with drew, if you want something new try The Mars Volta, they play some crazy stuff.

My opinion is that "pop" music has become a formula, most "rock" bands today all have the same over distorted detuned guitar, and gruff voiced singer. Each one has a song about sex, a song about being famous, and a song about drugs. I have completely given up on the rock genre other than the band Airbourne out of Australia, they're similar to AC/DC but a bit more agressive.

I think the most groundbreaking stuff is coming from the Metal and Progressive side of music. Opeth really blows my mind in that they can make music so deep and dark, then in the same song have a profoundly beautiful acoustic riff and melody. Porcupine Tree is also worth looking into if you want something new.

I love Opeth, but they are not really 'new'. If we are going with bands that have several years of history then definitely check out:

Porcupine Tree (prog ala Pink Floyd style),
The Flower Kings (prog ala Yes),
Spock's Beard (more prog),
Umphree's McGee (jam band with great songwriting).

Again... my point, Opeth is one of the most talented bands out there. :D
