No! The threads still open! Please tell me...

Well about 2 years before I had bought my first Axis I had played one second hand but being still at school I had zero cash to spend and a guitar like that was way out my reach.

I eventually got some cash together and I had fell in love with Axis the moment I played it so I had wanted one from that moment on. None of my local shops stocked the Axis though, which is why I jumped at the chance of playing the second hand one 2 years previous. I knew I would have to order one through the shop from the distributor. Its nice to play it I suppose before you buy it but I knew that the guitar would play like butter and it felt perfect to me from that tiny amount of time I had one in my hands...

So I go in to see what they can get me, they ring up strings n things and see what they have in stock. He rhymed off some of what they had and asked me what colour I said I dunno, what do they have? He mentioned Tobacco Sunburst amongst them and I said ye why not.

Whilst I was in the shop I took a wander around, they were also a Peavey dealership as well so the guy that must be on the Peavey commission was tryin to get me to change my mind. He brought out a Wolfgang Custom or something. I remember it being a hardtail. I had a shot of it out of my curiosity to see what it was like but I knew there wasn't a chance in hell I was taking it. However he kept trying to talk me out the Axis... so I said look...

who makes the pickups?... PV
who makes the bridge?... PV
who makes the tuners?... PV
an so on and so forth...

Axis I said it was all top brand top quality parts, I said all of that doesnt sit with me at all and fact that its all made by them and yet your PV is £200+ more expensive?!?... and to top it all off anyway its a hardtail!

He was not very happy though...

So I ordered my guitar and I didnt get it for a few days but it was worth it.
It hadn't been opened until I showed up and a few of the guys in the shop were eager to see it when i got around to opening it. I basically bought it blind I suppose and I could not be happier with it. I couldn't live without that guitar.

rattled on a bit eh?.....lol

Axis

I was at a guitar show in Boston Ma last summer and came across the Peavey booth...

On display they had the HP model based on the Wolfgang which we all know is based off the AXIS...

As I picked this guitar up I said to the salesman i want to love this guitar but it feels cheap?

I was tapping on the top of the body and it sounded like plastic and why is it so light? Feels almost hollow?

Turns out the guy I'm speaking 2 designed the Wolfgang and the new HP!

OOPS...

His response was
Music Man uses a Cheaper grade of wood then we do.... ??
The Axis feels heavy because of the low grade of wood there using!

Whatever the case may be.... My Axis feels like a real guitar not a PLASTIC version of it....

Sorry Peavey.

I've worked at a Peavey dealership- I think the reason that Peavey dealerships in the UK come across as a bt pushy (I'm generalising- I admit that), is not that Peavey give commission, but it is because they supply products at a price where retailers can make a profit.

At the time there would have been a better mark up on the Peavey, so it would be in the retailers better interests in terms of profit from one sale to sell you the Wolfgang. Also if there is a £1000+ guitar hanging on the wall it is a bit of a stock liability- UK guitarists are tight arses (present Ball players excepted! lol) and premium value guitars hang around shops longer than a cheaper one.

If you look at the economics of ordering a one off MusicMan to sell on to a customer it really isn't very profitable. That said if I had my own shop I would definitely prefer to stock MusicMan (MusicMen?!) than the Peavey. I think they have somewhat lost the plot in terms of guitar manufacture. They really don't have many pro quality guitars in their current range.

And I would take my weighty balls over the featherlight HP signature any day.

And I just noticed that it was Yoda Van Halen that I just replied to!

Since I saw one of your videos on YouTube a while back I've started practising loads more than I did- you really have inspired me to get better at the guitar. Thank you!

Seems like there is a lot of cathartic purging going on here. Purge. Go ahead. Get it off your chests... ;)
