I love your Sport too. Its very cool. I like to be able to swap pups, how are these pickguard Sports routed ?

Under the pickguard the routing is just 3 single coil sized holes in the wood, in fact you could do away with the pickguard if you didnt mind the screw holes! The pickups are mounted straight into the wood. The controls for vol and tone are rear mounted like on the Super Sport so no top routing there, all very clean.

didnt some of these come w/o a pickguard ?

where is the pick of beej's ????????

Pickguards featured on the earlier Sports before being dropped. I personally prefer them with pickguards as they seem to have more of a retro vibe.

Yeah, the pickguards were between '97 and '99. There were some really interesting 'in-between' models produced in the transition phase in '99. I think that's where some of the regular Axis models with the pickguard came from, although there's only a few about (not 100% sure if that's when they were produced).

I have a trans gold 2002 Sport with all black coil HH's, rosewood fb, matching headstock and trem.

Mine came with a really nice shell pickguard and the mounting screws. I have never installed it as the ash figuring is beautiful and the poly outer finish is really durable and doesnt really show many pick or finger scratches.

Id like to find another one with MM90s and no pg hopefully in trans orange.

I actually prefer Sports to SS's.

I saw an Axis Sport online with HSS configuration and a battery compartment on the back. Does anyone know what the battery is used for if the guitar has stock Dimarzios?

The HSS has the silent circuit on positions 1 & 3 (from memory).

This is still by far one of favorite guitars. I have two of them and just love the MM90 with piezo ASS. The versatility and tone is uniqued and IMHO not been matched. If I ever have to reduce my stock, this will one of the few that never goes.

Did they ever come with piezo? I would love one of those with piezo in an hss format!

Sure did. Not sure it came with HSS/Piezo pickup configuration though. I just sold this Black Sparkle Piezo Beauty!
