Good point! If I were the father of a child, I would maybe get him a SUB or something. Then I'd use the rest of the family's money to buy myself a slew of yummy basses. :D

I like the way you're thinkin'. I guess it's really easy for me to offer advice on the way to raise kids since I've never had any.

My parents bought me a top of the line cornet when I was 15, but I started out on a real piece of crap. I didn't start playing bass until I was 25, so I've been the one to buy all of them. IMO parents shouldn't just hand their kids anything they want. Otherwise you end up with another member of society that has no values or respect for others.
I guess it would be great to own all of those sick basses, but part of growing up is to learn how to interact with society and know the value of a dollar (or euro) as it may be. There seems to be some really great young people involved in this forum and I've enjoyed their comments and questions since I became a member, but there is always the exception that proves the rule in anything you're involved in. If it comes easy, you'll alway expect to get it that way and you'll probably never try very hard to achieve anything.

Good points here IMO. My dad was a band director when I was growing up - didn't pressure me to play anything just made all instruments available. I started on a used trumpet in 5th grade and showed a real passion for it. However my dad waited until I was in 8th grade after a few years of diligent practice to surprise me with my Vincent Bach Strad Model 37 M/L bore trumpet which I still have today. He knew I was passionate about it and time proved that so then he gifted me with that (Way to go Dad!):D

The kinds of bass collections that some of the younger players have today seem excessive to me, especially if they personally don't have any sweat equity in them. For example, Bovinehost has a very admirable collection of basses. That is wonderful because he has a certain amount of disposable income and has chosen to spend a little of it on that. Rest assured that he knows and appreciates the value of each and every one of those basses, because HE paid for them. Now I would be concerned about his boy if he joined this forum and started bragging about the 5 or 6 premium quality instruments that his folks had bought him. I have a feeling that Bov will be like my dad was; buy him a good solid player and wait to make sure he develops a real passion for it. Then maybe get him a real good bass for a special occasion down the road somewhere (birthday, Christmas, middle school grad, whatever).

My wife and I just bought our 11 year old niece a $150.00 Rogue bass starter package because she is interested in playing. She has had a couple of lessons and is showing some real natural talent for it. However it will be a few years of real diligence on it before we'd even consider getting her a real good bass. (Actually the Rogue and little amp sound a heckuva a lot better than what I started on!)

Just MO.

The horn that my dad bought for me was also a Bach Strad. It was a lacquer cornet. My mom sold it several years ago (with my permission) and I wish I had it back. I did buy a new Bach Strad 180/S37 about 3 1/2 years ago that I play now. I wish I had done a little more research though because there are some horns that sound better these days for about the same money.

Difficult to call this one because my mum and dad bought me a piano when I was six and I gave up lessons at 12. I then asked for an electronic keyboard/synth when I was 16 and got it and then for my 18th I said I wanted a bass, having never owned one and been content for a couple of months with playing a battered right handed guitar with the 4 bottom strings upside down.

At this stage they could have told me that they were not wasting any more of their hard earned cash on my musical whims and it would have been a fair call. However, my Dad went up to central London and came back with a £100 precision copy - I was fortunate that he had been in bands all his life as a singer and knew enough that he thought that a Precision copy was the way to go for a first bass. I suppose they thought it would be gathering dust within a couple of months.

Thereafter, amps, pedals new basses, all out of my own pocket and the sweetest moment was finally being able to justify buying myself a Ray after 5 years of a wait.

If the kids start young and stick at it then it is difficult to judge how much to spend on them, because they will become aware of the pro gear earlier than I ever did. If any of my daughters end up playing an instrument, then I think I will buy them what I can reasonably afford once they have proved they are going to stick at it, but unless a voilin teacher says "your daughter is a genius and is being held back by an inferior violin", then she can make do with what she has got and then buy an expensive one out of her first pay packet.

I would like to think my attituded will stay the same after I scoop a £10mm jackpot on the UK lottery this weekend - but I doubt it!

Well I just bought my 12 year old son a 4 string Rogue bass (Fender's starter line).

If he shows interest we'll upgrade him to say a mexican fender jazz or something. After that I'll help him get something better - but he'll have to be serious about playing and he'll have to chip in with some cash too. I think kids that have to work for something appreciate it more than those who get it for nothing.

Here's my 2 sons "jamming". The bass is one of my Fenders.

My little feller has a right nice Fender Bullet bass in his closet. Still bigger than he is, but it's there when and if he wants to play. He's got a few other little things but that's the Big Bass and he digs looking at it anyway.

I mean, he isn't even three yet, but.....I'm sick:

Let's face it Bovine, your little fella will be spoilt for choice and he won't even have to open the front door go down to the music store - unless you're gonna be a "keep your dirty little hands off my basses" kind of dad! :p

Now you've all got me thinking that my Pacific Blue Burst SR5 should have a black Abaloone PG. Maybe that would quell the GAS while I wait for my BonGo

With technology these days, I wonder if it'll be possible to make a flat LCD screen shaped like pickguard. Slap that baby on, hook it up to your preamp or something, and have visualizations running all the time! JOY!

This is the thread that never ends. It goes on and on my friends. Some people started typing it, not knowing what it was. This is the thread that never ends, my bass is amplified by Genz, some people've never played it, not knowing how great it is.
