my friends...I have an Idea.

producing and selling a CD has became very dangerous now, cause guitar music doesn't sell anymore ( here in france anyway )

many pseudo - labels came to me in the past two years with ridiculous contracts saying I'd have to pay by myself to press de CD, then, THEY take the money from the stores in their pocket...

so the idea came to me ...why not GIVNG my music via my website ? many guitar players earn their money ON THE ROAD, that's the only thing the P2P can't give you home, if you like a guy, you have to move and pay to see him live...

even the big names here in france have make the money with tour / endorsement / demo / masterclass...

the CD finally just come to make a buzz aroud you, making your name growing up in guitarist's heads...

so why not giving it for free ? would it be a good thing to make me a "known" guitarist and have to make more and more gigs?

times are changing...I think young musicians have to change the way they want to succeed...now that the internent and the P2P rules, having a record deal has become something very very hard...

here's a song...

just give me your opinion...

Great ... I like it :) :) :)

Like usual what you play is far beyond the scope of a normal human being ... and that sure that in France it will be hard to make money with such music. Tristan, please stop playing guitar and now learn how to dance, learn how to smile when you are on TV, date an actress from a sit-com ... and if a journalist asks you something, try to find the silliest answer... but remember the most important is to be on TV and in the "People" magazine.

If you continue with good music ... well you will find me in your concert but you will die poor

Who dares wins !

really cool tune Tristan, I like it a lot! that kinda style is really easy to listen to, and cool to jam over!!!

offering your music for free is a good idea i think, i would do the same if i was in your shoes, unless i really had a thing about giving stuff away. i dont know how much money could be made doing tours etc as a solo guitarist, but you would know, so trust your instinct.

If you offer it for free make sure it's not high quality, so people will want to purchase the higher quality stuff if they like it. Talent scouts and record people don't really go looking in clubs these day's, they tend to look online...

Some really great stuff there man - you are one hell of a guitar player! I agree with the guys who said the track has a certain jam track quality to it... it's really nice, it'll make you nod your head and tap your feet, but isn't really something that (as I see it) would alter the rotation of planet earth. You might want to look into the drum sound as well, as it is slightly "computer-y".

I think your idea is relatively sound, but would also keep the downloads at lower-than-MP3 quality. This, IMO, would represent the best of both worlds: your music would be out there for people to listen to and there would still be a reason to buy your disc.

Cheers

It's a novel idea for Instrumental Guitar-Oriented music. Obviously, for Pop music and other types of music that make me sick, CD sales are huge. Maybe, what I'd add to your idea Tristan is that the CDs should be short. They should only contain 4-5 tunes. Get listeners hooked with the freebies. Then, sell full CDs, at reasonable prices, on your site. Then, tour, endorse, etc.

Good luck!

Tristan...AWESOME as usual. Free? Man..that is a tough call. I would pay for it personally as I know how hard it is to write, record, produce and play. When it is availabel, let me know....I will PAY for a CD.

I tend to agree with Koogs Tristan!
What alot of artists do now is sell their tunes on their websites for a small fee through paypal....Vai does it!

$0.99 per track which is reasonable! At least that way you get a bit of cash for your hard work!

Everybody likes gettign free stuff at the end of the day and it might not lead to where you want it to....

I'd happily pay $0.99 for every track you decide to allow for download my friend...!

Tristan, you could always give a 30 seccond clip and then charge like they are saying. $0.99 is the Itunes charge, but charge what you feel people will pay. Most people are cheap, me included and try to get whatever they can for free.

Great tune!! When are you coming to the states???

Hi Tristan,

Many things to say here lol

1/ The track is great !!!!
2/ Free music ? not sure this is the ideal solution ? How many hours you spent writing, arraging producing this track ? it's a lot of work and you need to be paid for that ! I may be aold fashioned but I like a real cd. You have the artwork, the lyrics the muscians that contributed to the album.

I know it cost a lot of money to produce a record and you have no support from the 'so called' record company. But ...

If you play live a good way of selling your record is to offer it at the end of the concert. cause if people love your music they will not hesitate to spend few bucks for a cd

I think you can offer some tracks for free to get recognition but it may not be the ultimate way to promote your music

3/ regarding the record industry I have met Manu Katche one year ago, I gave him a demo and a business card in case he wants to contact me. He was kind enough to post me a letter reviewing my work. The conclusion was "the songs are great but don't expect too much from the record industry today. it's hard even for me". If someone like Manu Katche tell you he is facing difficulties with the music industry I rekon I have no chance :D

Anyway, it's a silly period we are now passing someone said that with today's criteria the Beatles would never get a record deal

you can check out http://www.fuzz.com/ for a brief summary but if you want details just PM or email me cuz i dont wanna plug my company on BP's board.

I think free music is a good idea but only put acouple out there. With so many people recording out of thier houses it will most likely need to be real catchy. I think the live show is the only real way to go and you need some vocals along with the guitar to connect with a larger audience. People pay to be entertained so you need to be entertaining and work them into apreciating your art.

There was an article in last weeks MusicWeek (UK's industry publication) with an article about SONY/BMG CEO talking about how much the music industry is changing. It talked about iTunes. In the UK the standard royalty share going to a signed artist is only £0.04 per song sold.

You would be better of doing what others have suggested and havng it securely hosted on your site and have people pay for it via paypal etc. You can then put lower quality clips on places like youtube and (as much as i hate the place, dan Murdoch) myspace, using them as promotional tools

Also there tends to be more money (at least for you anyway) by going for a publishing deal.
