After getting my Axis 2 weeks ago, I fell in love instantly. I decided to sell my ESP Eclipse II and pick up a JP6. Well, it got here yesterday :)

The first thing that jumped out at me when I opened the case was the color. It's a 2007 model with normal inlays, piezo and a D-Sonic in Radiance Red. I believe the color is discontinued, but it is absolutely stunning.

When I picked it up, I was surprised to find just how thin the neck is. I was expecting a thinner neck then my Axis but man...this is the thinnest neck I've ever felt and I have played many of the pointy headstocks :)

It plays extremely well and while it feels very different from my Axis, there is also a familiarity about it. The frets are bigger, but not jumbo, so I love it. I think the neck and fretboard need some love, so I will get to that soon.

Also, I have a question. When I got it, the trem was tilted all the way back. The person who had it before me said they preferred it that way and had tightened the spring screws to the max. I loosened them up and balanced the trem as best I could, but I am going to have to try to set the guitar up myself. I just got a strobe tuner, so I am going to try. Any tips on setting up the Petrucci/intoning it?

Finally, I noticed an issue with it. Whenever I would play, it almost felt like it was fretting out a little bit. Notes don't sustain much, maybe 3-4 seconds before they just die out. My Axis sustains for far longer, and I doubt the JP6 is supposed to be that much less. Chords seem to have a strange tonal property to them which I am attributing to the same thing. Is this just a setup issue?

Either way, I love the guitar. Once I have it setup and give it the once over, it will become a great part of my new EBMM family :) Now I just have to figure out how to get my hands on a Luke, even though I can't afford one now ;)

Anyway, here is my new baby :

It plays like a Ferrari, right? So red is a good color! It's pretty and I hope you enjoy it along with your Axis. You'll get the trem right.

Never thought of that...I do have a pair of balls now don't I? Woo! Don't tell my wife, she'll take em and put em in a jar above the fridge with my other pair, so keep it on the down low!

Thanks for the link to the FAQ. I will check it out when I get home from work and use it to intonate/setup my JP6 correctly so it plays as nice as it looks. I love the way my Axis plays right now more so then the JP6, however the JP6 looks so killer....it really is an absolutely gorgeous color. Props to whoever works at Ernie Ball that came up with Radiance Red.

Oh! One other question and I will check the FAQ for this as well. I am assuming that the back of the neck is supposed to be the same as my Axis, correct? That being the case, the JP6 feels much more used, obviously because it is :)

What can I do to get it back to that like new unfinished feeling that my Axis has right now? I meticulously clean my Axis every time I play it and try to ensure that the neck stays clean and keeps it's new feeling.

Any tips are appreciated :)

Wonder Wipes ;)

I have them! But I thought those were for neck/fretboard cleaning and not for the body? =P

I have other polish and such for the body, but the wonder wipes and string cleaner for the neck/fretboard :)

Thanks! :)

Been playing it every day and I am really liking it. I'm still unsure if I will keep it or if I want to try out a Luke. No need to come to a decision quickly though, so no big deal. I can take as much time as I want with it :)

I will only keep it if I find myself bonding with it and absolutely loving it like I do with my ASS. If that doesn't happen, then Luke, here I come :)
