After getting my Axis 2 weeks ago, I fell in love instantly. I decided to sell my ESP Eclipse II and pick up a JP6. Well, it got here yesterday
The first thing that jumped out at me when I opened the case was the color. It's a 2007 model with normal inlays, piezo and a D-Sonic in Radiance Red. I believe the color is discontinued, but it is absolutely stunning.
When I picked it up, I was surprised to find just how thin the neck is. I was expecting a thinner neck then my Axis but man...this is the thinnest neck I've ever felt and I have played many of the pointy headstocks
It plays extremely well and while it feels very different from my Axis, there is also a familiarity about it. The frets are bigger, but not jumbo, so I love it. I think the neck and fretboard need some love, so I will get to that soon.
Also, I have a question. When I got it, the trem was tilted all the way back. The person who had it before me said they preferred it that way and had tightened the spring screws to the max. I loosened them up and balanced the trem as best I could, but I am going to have to try to set the guitar up myself. I just got a strobe tuner, so I am going to try. Any tips on setting up the Petrucci/intoning it?
Finally, I noticed an issue with it. Whenever I would play, it almost felt like it was fretting out a little bit. Notes don't sustain much, maybe 3-4 seconds before they just die out. My Axis sustains for far longer, and I doubt the JP6 is supposed to be that much less. Chords seem to have a strange tonal property to them which I am attributing to the same thing. Is this just a setup issue?
Either way, I love the guitar. Once I have it setup and give it the once over, it will become a great part of my new EBMM family
Now I just have to figure out how to get my hands on a Luke, even though I can't afford one now
Anyway, here is my new baby :
Awesomely figured birds-eye maple
The crazy ass back of this thing, it's like a Nasa control panel =P
Tried to get a close up of the sparkle...didn't come out too good...
