Look what just showed up all the way from the UK!! Isn't she beautiful. Can't wait to get her open.

They put some old bits of wood inside to keep her in shape! Don't need that.

And here she is, look at the grain on that cardboard. Check out her flaps.

Wow, sick top dude....look at those lines!

And of course, you'll be wanting a family shot............

Seriously though folks, after losing my Red Sparkle SS (plus a black & gold 335 & an ash Deluxe Strat) last year to fund some (ahem) domestic problems, I felt I was owed something....and it's my birthday on Saturday. Saw this on the net, so thought I'd give it a try. As you other backwards boys know, we rarely get to try many things out (especially living many miles from any decent guitar shops)...so it's always a bit of a gamble.

First impressions? Very nice sounds (I'm not a heavy distortion user), I have another guitar with SD P90s, but the MM90s seem a little more refined and "musical" . Sounds ideal for what I'm playing now, which is the tamer end of the blues. The neck is very smooth & instantly comfortable . Probably the easiest playing guitar I've ever tried. Beautifully made guitar, not a mark on it.

Drawbacks? Well the drawbacks are mine, not the guitars. I just don't get the flame maple thing. To me it looks like a turquoise guitar with random black stripes on it and a bit of a mess.I know I'm in a minority of one here, but I actually wouldn't want one of those BFR guitars as a gift as the transparent finishes on wood grain are an instant turn off for me. Just not Rock & Roll (though the solid silverburst was nice). My 3 favourite guitars I've ever seen on here are the Fuschia Sparkle SS, a medallion gold lefty Luke and Axilla's beautiful pearl lavender SS (what I wouldn't give for a lefty in that colour!). I also knew when I bought it that I wasn't much of a fan of painted headstocks on maple necks. I think thay make the maple look anaemic....a little too "Ikea" as a girl once told me. No offence intended to all you flame lovers, just a taste thing.
Axis4.jpg

So why buy it I hear you ask (probably along with plenty of abuse!!)? Well, I've wanted to try an MM90 ASS for a while and they're pretty rare lefty. Didn't want to pay the new European price & wait 6 months just to find the shape or sound didn't suit me, so thought I could live with the (to me) unattractive finish.

So what now? I guess I have 3 options
1. Keep it, play it, learn to live with it. After all I'll be behind it.
2.Get it refinished, which would involve painting the top a solid colour and then having the headstock sanded bare. Nicer (for me) to look at but obviously a disaster if I ever tried to sell it.
3. Sell it, take a hit on the price and order something in a colour I like now that I know I really like the instrument.
What would you do? (I know, I know, get therapy or a lobotomy). Anyone else out there playing a guitar whose colour they don't really like?

Anyhow, for those of you I haven't already upset, here's a room full of lefty guitars (EBMMs at the front!!)

Sorry...I know you don't get the attraction to the flamed maple, but that is a beautiful axe!

One man's random black striped mess is another mans treasure!

Congrats though.

Thank you my fellow lefty, it surely is a beautifully made thing and sounds just right. Maybe I need to wear glasses with flame filter lenses!!

Well, I think it looks amazing, and it's got MM90's, that makes it even better in my book...

But it is your guitar, so if you want to get it refinished, go for it... (Just make sure you do it properly! :))

If you're thinking of selling it, you won't have too much trouble getting rid of it. As you said, I don't think there are a lot of lefty, MM90 Super Sports...

If you don't want it, I'll take it... And go all "Jimi Hendrix" style on it... Oh wait... I won't do that... Forget that... :D

Why not just buy some cool raybans with red tint lenses, then when you look it will seem purple? Seriously seems fine to me (i'm now able to write this after beeing choked with envy for the last 2 minutes)

Re cardboard box glue patches pic - keep it, frame and hang on wall with gilt chain under a light - can tell folks who come around it's modern art , one of Jackson Pollacks "beige and card" period works.

Accept best offer, buy more guitars!

Keep this guitar and wait until it grows on you, you may even be able to forget your Silo Spec for this one

Nice looking collection there Andy. I think you should give the ASS a few months before ditching it. I really wouldn't recommend the refinish, those never seem to turn out right unless you put in a lot of money.

BTW, the boxes look really cool. I need to keep a collection going.

I think it looks better than all the other ones put together, excpet for the pearl purple Silo Sp. If you really like the guitar itself, meaning the tone and comfort of it, than just sell it and order yourself one in a solid color the way YOU like it. And give someone a chance to have that amazing piece the way it is.

Funny opening, Andy! Nice guitar. I can dig what you're saying, not being into fancy tops either. But, man, that's a nice looking guitar by any standards! I say just play it, see how you bond with it for a few months. Once you know for sure it's a keeper, paint the thing if it still bothers you.

Well because it is a left handed Musicman and you are in Europe you probably won't take that much or any of a loss if you decided to resell it. But personally I would not sell it untill you have had it for a month or so, I mean geez that top is sooo classy, it could grow on you.

Hi Andy !

First off, this is the funniest starting thread I've read in weeks :D
Great story built around those boxes !!! I'm a bit with Koogs wondering whether the 7ender cardboard will stay in tune, oui ou merde :rolleyes:

Your new ASS - man, apart from any preference in finishes - that guitar IS just gorgeous and the flames are as nice as the ones on my ASS MM90 ! I just love your new ASS ...wait - was that appropriate to say ?! :rolleyes:
Well, if you could make THAT ASS a righty I would almost feel tempted converting my pearl lavender Silo Special to a lefty so we could maybe exchange... but then again - THAT would not be a good thing to do to those guitars.

"If it looks good, you'll see it;
if it sounds good, you'll hear it;
if it's marketed right, you'll buy it;
but...if it's real, you'll feel it."
(Robert James Ritchie aka Kid Rock)

Keep that wonderful (cause Beautiful lies in the eye of the beholder) guitar at least for a few weeks, give her some caresses and find out what she does to you. Then you'll find out what to do, and I guess you are going to keep her.

Great thread, even greater guitar, unparalleled guy - you rock ! (...or rather blues ;))

I am really having a blast with you around here !

Cheers with beers from Bavaria

+1 on this one!

Maybe I'm a little biased because I love any kind of trans blue with quilt or flame. For me it's one of the nicest tops. Would be a pitty to hide it behind some sort of opaque colour. If you can't bond, sell it an order a new one.
