Tonight I did the belly carve with a spokeshave, scraper and sandpaper. See the "Shaping the Body" page.

Thanks.

I've got frets! Today I installed the frets. I haven't trimmed them yet but they look great. It couldn't have gone better for my first fret install. See the "Slotting The Fretboard" page for a bunch of pics. Thanks for looking!

The frets are in and beveled and the dye process has started. I wiped on a coat of black dye as a wash coat to get the figure in the maple to pop. This will be sanded back to base leaving the dye in the grain only.

Dave,
Thanks for keeping us up to date.

Wow those are some jumbo frets. It looks like the fretboard is scalloped. Will they be left that way or will you do some work to bring them down? The fretboard looks real nice too.

RIT??? I wasn't sure what you would use for the dye, I guess I figured some sort of wood stain, although I guess you can't get those in anything other than shades of brown.

Nice flame popping out there.

So when will you start accepting orders? :D

take care,
fred

Thanks fsmith. Yeah, those are jumbo frets. Part # 00150 at Stew Mac. I haven't levelled or crowned them yet so they're still huge. RIT is a fabric dye. You can disolve it in water or laquer and yes, it can be used on wood. I've seen a beautiful Carvin Bolt Kit done w/ RIT dye.

The color coat will be done with Homestead Transfast dye though. Turquoise Blue.

When will I start taking orders? LOL. As soon as they start coming in! :)

Wow! That guitar looks amazing, love the top!

If only I had the skills to craft a guitar...

I´m sure that it will turn out to be a great player!

Guess what? Today I test fitted the bridge and neck for the first time! Yeah I know. Until today, I didn't know if my string alignment from nut to saddle was good or not. Well now I do but it was touch and go for a while. The pic shows the sealed body sanded to 400. I'm ready to shoot clear nitro now.

See the "Finish Stage" page on the site:

Yesterday, I finished the neck. I buffed the 2nd coat of Tru-Oil with 0000 steel wool and then gave it two coats of wax. I learned that even on a raw neck, one coat of Tru-Oil is enough. Not much of the 2nd application penetrated.

Now, it's silky and satiny. Tonight, I'll put the tuners on and take a pic.
