My pups are low, and I use several EQ pedals, still bright. Pup change time. No idea to what, definitely want a true stratty tone, no metal for me. Maybe Fat 50's.

If you can get them down under try the Don Grosh Fat 60s pickups - they really have that early 60s tone; they should warm up a bright guitar.

I guess my ears were ruined by all those 70s Strats I grew up with; a Silo Special (SSS version) always sounds like an early 70s model to me (think Gilmour circa Meddle through WYWH)

I have two Silo Specials and I agree that they can be on the bright side. This is a good thing if you like sparkly brightness and have a darker guitar for alternate thicker tones. One is a SSS and one is a HSS. I think the stock single coils are fantastic. Having said that, I have experimented with soldering new pickguards with Molex connectors (I have saved the stock pickguards ans pickup assemblies intact so I can return to stock if I wish to). I have tried many Dimarzio pickups but I have little experience with other brands, for what it's worth ...

In the SSS, I have 280k ohm RS Guitarworks pots and Jensen .022 paper and oil tone cap and I have Dimarzio Area 58s in the neck and middle. In the bridge, I have a Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Solo single coil which is quite warm and midrangy to counter the brightness (discontinued, but Dimarzio has another model that is essentially equivalent). Lots of great tones between these.

In the HSS, I have 500k ohm RS Guitarworks pots and Jensen .022 paper and oil tone cap and I have Dimarzio Area 58s in the neck and middle but an Air Zone HB in the bridge. The Air Zone is a warm, midrangy pickup that can really tame a bright bridge position and sounds great clean. Highly recommended for a thick, lush PAF sound that is not too bright. The Tone Zone is similar, but with more harmonics and a more compressed sound, and since I primarily like clean to overdriven tones, the Air Zone works best for me. For a metal player, the Tone Zone, Breed, or maybe AT-1 (never tried it) might be better as a warmer pickup.

Happy tone hunting!

Dont care about the bridge pup, I never use it on a SSS axe, so long as they bridge/middle tone is great. Ive used Texas Specials a lot in the past, I can say that I think they completely suck. The best single coils Ive ever heard are in the Rory Gallagher strat, maybe some Bare Knuckle pups should be on the menu.

+1 on both points. I have the Explorers for the deep rumble/warmer tones, and when I get my Silo (though an HSH) it won't necessarily be forced to cover those bases. However, I do intend to have several pickguards, all with different pickup sets complete with pots and switch for different roles, one of which will be an EMG 89/SA/89 combo. I intend to squeeze everything from warm and fat to bright and jangly out of it!

My experience is that the Fat 50s work best with a fat maple neck. Definitely one of the best pickup sets for clean and crunchy songs, not so good with more overdrive (think of classic rock/hardrock). You have to play around with the height of the pups, for me it was better to set them low.

i have the same gripe... the silo special is too bright for what i play. it's a shame too because it is such a nice and comfortable guitar to play! i just cant bond with it due to the brightness. Even with the RW fretboard it still doesnt have enough bottom end to satisfy my needs. im going to try a crunch lab in the bridge and see how it goes.. :) i do seriously love the feel of the silo special though!

everything the Silo lacks is exactly what the Al with MM90's has in abundance. I'll stick with the AL!

+100000 AL MM90 is one hell of a guitar. I sold my silo spec few month after getting the AL MM90.

This guitar looks weird, and I have considered Leo Fender as a pure genious for many years for the shape of the strat

I think BP and Dudley succeeded in taking away the crown from Leo

The Albert LEE MM90 is the perferct designed guitar !!! from sound point of view of course and from comfort playing it. I tell you guys once you play it it will be so comfy that you will forget the "weird" part and realise how advance this guitar is on its Era

Now dean back to you topic I think you have solved the problem by letting the Silo go :p (For Sale Thread)

EBMM are made to be played so I think it's wiser to part if you are not satisfied with it

Finding your sound is a long journey (ask Keith AKA crazy fing) but worth every minutes and money you spend to find it :D

Dean has sold it and the aussies think they are too bright....I dont like vegemite or marmite ior whatever tar they ruin bread with...so we are even and I can put this to rest.......there was this aussie lady cop though........

PS Dizzy nailed it....if they are too bright for you knuckleheads try one of those 'soft saddles" before you spend a ton of dough on the pickups...."
