Depending on how your band's finances are put together, 50,000 units can be pretty darn nice for one release. There's bands out now that are ignoring record companies and radio and keeping $10 of each $10 cd they sell and do well. Granted, they aren't getting famous, but they are getting paid. With home recording and CD Baby (which links up to amazon and itunes) there's a lot bands can do on their own. Not everything, mind you, but there's nothing stopping a band from hiring talented graphic artists and publicists on their own.

YES!!! That is a principle I have always believed in. You can get bigger but what are your trading for it?!? 9 out of 10 times it is Quality and that is the key ingredient that got most companies to the top of their game. I am so glad that EBMM has kept Quality first and I know it will keep us coming back for more and bringing others to EBMM!!!

That's the point.
At some point people will hopefully see the value of hand made music again. A lot went wrong in the past, with the artists needing the record companies to succeed instead of the other way round.

It's the industry that needs the artists, because otherwise they have no product.

I gladly buy an album form the band or small label for 7 to 9 bucks if I know where the money goes.

Besides this, touring ain't so bad over here in Europe.

Thanks for the blog BP, good read as always.
Been collecting Cd's since there was the three formats on the same shelf, (Vinyl, tape an the new invention , CD!) an still collecting them to this day, theres something so unsatisfying about downloading music, even if is off iTunes cause all your left with is a copied CD with no case !

Great post. The ticketmaster scenario is especially painful. With the price of tickets, taxes, a convienence fee for buying a ticket over the internet (which is amazing to me), it's just too expensive to attend a live show for a big name artist. Not to mention the scalping is completely out of control.

If I had a time machine, and the chops/skills, I'd be shooting for something like Craig does as opposed to the paparazzi and fame.

I play music because it brings me and my friends and brothers together in a beautiful way. We practice, record, gig, busk, and pop up at open mic nights and people love it. My dream is to play professionally, whether there's money in it or not.

I also go to as many gigs as I possibly can. I saw one of my favorite bands The Prodigy 5 times in the summer, Maceo Parker twice, and countless other bands big and small. What we have to realise and accept is that people are changing the way they listen to music, changing the way they obtain it, the way they make it... The music industry shouldn't be protected from change, it should adapt and evolve with the consumer, like every other industry.

BP, I think you just have a bit of an old fahioned view on what kids dreams are... also, almost everything that is released nowadays is released on vinyl. That's one way to combat piracy. I buy vinyl, and I also download.

Oh, and if people say there is no good music around now, you're not looking hard enough. We are in a golden age right now...

Sad. He just needs to move on. Misunderstandings are always a two way street. We need to look back and see how we got ourselves there. Hope he makes peace with himself soon.

As for the post. The ticket pricing has been insane. A few years ago I wanted to take my wife to see Sade who we both love. The prices were so outrageous that we did not get to go. This is definitely a live show killer.

I am with you there. I never stoped to buy vinyl and it is true. here are some amazing bands and artists out there nowadays. I don't know if it is bad that they won't be another Michael Jackson...

I think BP's point was not that there are not a lot of great bands out there or that the goal is to be a Michael Jackson or whoever. The point is that the opportunity for people to get to see these great bands is declining and that the music industry is becoming a void instead of the dream inspiring and fulfilling machine it started out as. I think there should be an option for there to be another MJ or other great talent as opposed to not having the option.

As for kids' dreams; I have friends whose kids think that playing video game guitar is the same talent as making real music. If they can ever make the leap from video games to real instruments then there is hope. This may be like the Time Machine, we may have to lose it all before we can rebuild.

BP , I really appreciate how much you make people think and learn for themselves, that is a skilled that is not just given , but is deveploped and perfected.
