So are you saying that the feel of the neck is what is the most important to you, or you just can't play a fast enough stream of notes on it? Ironic, no?

There are no EBMM dealers that carry stock in my entire STATE! Closest is 1000kms away. Hasnt stopped me ever. If I havent played a particular model I usually buy off ebay used so if I dont like it I can sell it back without losing any money. If I like it i'll keep it or be assured that when I order a new one it will have no surprises. Seriously, if you thought about it there are ways to not be let down and lose money.

But Rob, you aren't bussing tables.

TM, keep playing with it. The finished neck is an absolute dealbreaker for me, but didn't you know it was finished?

That was good writing, New guitar day should be a great experience because it just doesn't come around all that often. I remember when I bought my first EBMM ( it wasn't that long ago) I would check the fedEx page with my tracking number for the 4 or 5 days it took to get it to me and that day it was to arrive I took the day off and watched the clock tick away until that man with that truck pulled up. It is unfortunate yours wasn't what you expected.

I know what it is like to have to buy something without first trying it out, i bought my Silo without first playing one because the local stores didn't carry EBMM. thank god i fell in love with right out of the case. I did travel 60 miles from my house to try out a JP6 before I bought one online.

The thing I LOVE about both of my EBMM's is the unfinished necks, i have never played a BFR so i don't know how they feel but I do own a PRS with a painted neck and I just don't like it as much.

He has to be enthusiastic! Unfortunately, selling Fender only requires him to open the door in the morning. I hope they do sell some, so new stock can be brought in. That black Luke is almost 2nd hand!

yeah i know he does, but ithink he was being genuine, he kept crapping on about EB like any of us here, apart from being wrong about a few things :)
but still, props to him for the effort.

on another example of pain in the arse guitar salesmen (diff store this time) being wrong, some guy was trying to tell me that peavey had bought ernie ball, he was basing that half-mary-of-a-guess on the whole axis - wolfgang switch by Eddie van halen, good deduction ..

I TOTALLY agree with this statement .....the UNfinished neck is THE reason i started to play EBMM ...and the Quality of the Instrument SOLD ME

Same here, but then I played a BFR JP and the preference for unfinished necks went out the window ............

+1. My first BFR was initially ordered as a JP7, but I thought it over after coming home from GC and decided I should go back to the store and spend more time on the finished neck (albeit upside down as they had no lefties).

It took me a few minutes to adjust, but those necks feel nothing like your average painted neck. It's not sticky feeling, and doesn't have that thick gloss feel to it either. I changed my order to the BFR and never regretted it. I even sold my rosewood neck because I didn't like the feel as much as the finished neck.

I've never quite understood the finished vs. unfinished neck thing. I think it's probably just me because I'm weird, but I don't notice the textural difference when I'm switching between my guitars - I don't even think about it. I only notice the neck shape difference. Having said that, I gotta say that I don't have to alter technique at all when I switch.

I played a Les Paul from 1973 - 2005 and of course it had a painted finished neck. Also had a lacquered neck guitar from 84 onwards.
Come 2005 and I'm no longer an EB virgin and I have got to say that the gunstock oiled neck is my preference now. Everybody who plays my balls just love the feel of the neck.

I won't be going back to a finished neck but hey that's me.

Spud, I have a bongo with a painted neck and I do like the feeling of that neck. EBMM painted neck are way different from the other guitars I have played

I love them both painted and oiled

Same here exactly. I don't notice it at all.

I just feel like the necks on my EB's are like my favourite pair of old slippers - always feels really comfortable (don't smell as much!!);). The neck on my Les Paul was really played in - yet I can't bond with that neck - Just prefer the raw necks now.
oops
seem to rail roading the thread - sorry !!

Its all about choices

I 100% agree BP.i took out my BFR last nite for the first time in over a month as i cant seem to put down the 25th since getting it a few months ago.
I really love the unfinished neck but i also love the finished neck on the JP.

Best of both worlds i suppose;)

Well he's been suspiciously absent since his first post. Hopefully he's been playing the BFR and bonding with the neck.

Is there a happy ending to this sad tale ??

Just to put my two pennies worth in,i've been playing for about 40 years and have been fortunate enough to have worked with some mega players and still own over 15 very, very good guitars(lucky as my two grown up kids keep on "borrowing" mine and have lost about 8 to them so far) anyway,i have hands like plates of meat and always buy guitars with big wide necks.Last year i bought a Luke(my first MM) and instantly couldn't get on with the thin neck and finish, indeed on its first live outing i kept on hitting the wrong strings.I went through the same sinking feeling of despair and just put it back in its box.
All i can say now is that within one week of feeling like that,it became my #1 guitar and 14 months later,it still is.Trust me,if you buy and play guitars that you instantly feel at ease with, you finish up playing the same stuff on all of them, get outside your usual comfort zone and you will learn, modify and eventualy improve your versatility, skill and mindset. You have a quality product and you will be rewarded.

Oh and cheer up fella.:)
