I'm new to this website and have also recently purchased a Sparkle White Sterling. I had previously purchased a 5 string Stingray from G.C. but I couldn't seem to dial in a warm bassy tone with it. I really think there might have been something wrong with the pre- amp on this particular bass as I had tried others which sounded great. I returned it and resigned myself to the fact I may never get a Music Man bass. But a few weeks later I saw an ad for "an Ernie Ball bass, perfect, $800.00." I went over to check it out. I am a recent convert to the bass, being mainly a sax player, but I figured I'd get more work playing bass, which I enjoy playing. I had the guy play it for me with all the different settings and in different styles(he's a great bass player). I was amazed at the tonal variations and great looks. I played it awhile, loved the feel of the neck, bargained a bit since it didn't have the case, and left with a perfect condition Sparkle white Sterling for $750.00. Later that day I purchased a Music Man case from G.C. for $100.00. I've taken it to two band practices and it sounds so nice in the mix. I even like the single coil tone which some people seem to have no use for. I think that pickup sounds great in a blues setting, nice and clean, yet surprisingly bassy, considering its location near the bridge. This is my favorite bass, out of my '83 Japanese Squire P-Bass with S.D Quarterpounders, a Mexican 5 string Fender with Noiseless pick-ups and Series/parallel mod, a Geddy Lee Fender, and my 5 string Walnut Carvin bolt kit , which is running a close second. I can't say enough about the quality, feel and tone of this bass. :)

Welcome to the club!

Glad you got a second-chance at an opportunity to experience the joy of an EBMM bass - I too absolutely love my Sterling! :)

"Jazzbassman23 Man, for a sax player, you sure have a lot of basses. "

Yes, but I think I have enough now.... :D

I'll try to get a nice photo of it soon. It has the rosewood neck and some nice scattered bird's eye on the back and headstock.

"r goldsmith The single coil tone gets plenty of use from this user, both on the Sterling and the Stingray 5. "
What applications do you use it with?

Basically the tone on this bass is exactly what I want in a bass- I still get the warmth of a traditional tone for my blues stuff and the slap tone( for when I figure out how to do that). I love the way it cuts through those loud guitars and yet remains pleasant to the ear.
It fits my hands so well I forget I'm even playing and the weight is quite managable. I am going to weigh it today in the nurse's office at school where I teach. It must be in the low 9's or high 8's. I just weighed it- exactly 9 lb. It seems lighter.
Thanks for the welcome. all! ;)

Welcome. I have had my Sterling a little over 2 months now and love it. Best neck I've ever played.

With the switch to the bridge (coils in parallel) I get a warm and punchy traditional MM thump.

With the switch to the neck (coils in series) I get a bit more "edge" - sharper, snappier tone. This is my favorite spot.

I find the switch in the middle (single coil) best when using a chorus effect. It provides better clarity.

Just my 2¢! :)
