SWEET! I've been itching to buy a 5er to toy with. This is perfect. And it's got my favorite colors, black 'n' maple.

a former bandmate is selling to me her used Ernie Ball Music Man,Sub bass, originally made in USA for 300usd. I read that this model was discontinued in 2006. Then I saw this thread. She said she bought it for $1,000. I am a new bass player with just over a year of learning experience and have no knowledge of this type of bass. Is it really worth that much considering the "new" SUB series coming out with that sub $300 price? Any comments? Thanks!

First, welcome to the Forum. My one pastor had an older SUB bass which is actually what got me turned on to Music Man basses because his sounded so good. I don't know what the older ones went for but I can assure you they were more than $300.00 new. I have heard they went in the $700.00 to $800.00 range or more new. If he is selling you the one for $300.00 assuming it is still in good shape with everything working and no dings or dents or damage on the bass, I would go for it. That is a pretty good deal.

I forget where the old SUB's were made but I believe they were assembled here in the U.S.. With the new SUB's coming out, they are made of a lesser expensive wood and I believe they are made and assembled overseas but don't quote me on that because they may also be assembled over here. I'm sure someone on here can conform that though.

Thanks JayDawg for your comment. I really appreciate your opinion. She said she bought it 6 months ago. So It must be used one when she bought it. I can't find a used one on sale in Ebay, Guitar Center, or at Musician's friend. I'm wondering about this model. She'll have me test it for a few days and I'll check it out including the serial number.

The Music Man S.U.B. series was an effort to bring full-bore Music Man quality to the entry market. There are some differences, but in essence they are genuine American-made (not assembled) Music Man basses with top-flight hardware, electronics and wood quality. It will say Made in San Luis Obispo on it. The primary difference between an original S.U.B. and regular-production MM basses is body contouring and finish.

The new SBMM "SUB" basses are made in Asia and (I believe) inspected here. They are true entry-level.

Paying $1000 for one seems a bit steep, even new.

For $300 I'd grab it. If it's a 5-string, give me her number and get out of my way.

I have owned 14 subs, cheapest ones being $175 and the highest price for one being a fretless 5 that cost me $650. $300 is a good price if it is in good shape and the neck is nice. Subs are the best USA made bass for the price. The last sub 5 I owned outplayed any SR5 I have owned. It will be hard for the new sterling line of subs to compare to the original ones.
A.D. the best price I have found for a sub 5 was $350, I should have kept that one.

Thanks for the comment, man. No, you can't have it as it's a 4-string. =D

The other main diff between USA SUBs and "mainline" MM
basses is the poplar body of the SUBs ... which I really dig,
as it's never harsh sounding, even with RWs. SUBs are a
truly great bargain. I did let my SUB go ... but only cuz I'd
gotten a great deal on a Ray 30. The 'hog body of the Ray
30 is also "harsh-resistant", plus it has a 3-band EQ, which
to me is preferable over the 2-band.

Even at a great price, a Ray 30 is a rather expensive way
to replace a SUB ... which only reinforces what a bargain
the SUBs are. The other "expensive SUB" [IMHO] is the
Classic series ... 2-band EQ, non-contour body ... fancy
cosmetics aside, the Classic is the newest SUB.
