I think most of the sports were made during that time period. My green sport (1997)has a recessed neck plate as well. My green Axis built in 2000 doesn't.
You don't see many of the older Axis Sports with matching headstocks. You definitely don't see many in brown metal flake. I actually don't know why this color was so hated...it's actually a pretty nice copper color. I add guards to all of my Sports that don't have them. They look naked without them. This one isn't installed yet. I also plan to put vintage saddles on it as I prefer the look of them. These are the photos I have for now. I will need to get a photo of the back of the neck. The maple is fantastic on this one.
Man, that is a nice Sport. I wish mine had a rosewood board and matching headstock.
Any chance of a pic without the guard?
My sport is the best sounding guitar I have, but the other 2 are prettier hahahaha.
