As soon as I'd seen the pics of this year's PDN, I knew I had to have one. So I ordered an AL HH with the package, but that won't come until December or so.

Cue a few days ago, a few shops started receiving some PDNs. The pictures looked quite different from the original MusicMan pics, especially Sweetwater's; theirs looked much flatter and greyer than the vibrant blue sparkles I expected. I started worrying about my AL :(

But then, Drum Guitar City Land had their Valentine in-stock. And it looked GLORIOUS. Still grey, but with a thicker grain. And a hell of a neck to boot!

Got her today; potato pics for now:

First of, as of every single MusicMan, the build quality is just superlative. Incredible axe. Lightweight, GORGEOUS and perfect finish, and she sounds HUGE. The ebony board has a light brown streak to it... the stainless steel frets are buttery smooth, as is their wont.

The roasting of the neck makes it virtually disappear in your hand. It feels just amazing but then again, all of their necks do, at least to me.
The flame is a little uneven on this example; it fades a little on the player's side. I'd have obviously preferred it the other way around but, as you can see from the pics, it's not like it's an ugly neck either!

The electronics are so far removed from my usual setup, but are very intuitive. In large part this is due to the push-push which are, I am not exaggerating here, SO MUCH BETTER and easier to use than push-pulls... One controls the boost circuit, the other the neck pickup's split.
This baby also has the silent circuit built-in. So she's dead quiet on all single-coils positions.
Normally, the first thing I'd do to a guitar like this is replace the bridge single-coil with a humbucker (mark my words: a Bareknuckle HolyDiver would sound incredible in this large slab of Swamp Ash...). I'd then replace the 3-way switch with a 5-way and wire it like an Axis or AL HH. But I'm not sure I'll ever get to that, for three reasons:
1) the silent circuit makes re-wiring a little annoying, and I may have to sacrifice it to simply things
2) It's easier to use the push-pull than to quickly hit the intermediate positions on a 5-way!
3) she sounds GREAT :)
I've never heard a Maroon5 song but I'll give James Valentine this: this guy knows how to design a coooool guitar...

EDIT: One thing about this axe: I really wish it had a forearm contour. The wedge-shaped body is advertised as being more comfortable but it is not, to me. Squared body edges always dig into my arm and this is no exception. There's also no tummy cut but that's not as noticeable.

I have a standard-finish Valentine and it's the best guitar I have picked up. You'd be nuts to change the pickups on it though--they're one if its best parts!

Congratulations!

Looks amazing, but is there any burst on it at all? Almost looks like one continuous color...

It took me a few minutes to spot but there IS a burst. It's just so subtle it may as well not be there.

Added a note about the lack of forearm contour. That wedge-shaped body is nowhere near as comfy as a contoured body would be.

I had also ordered an AL HH (hardtail, non-matching headstock) on June 27th, and this summer received an ETA of December 12th.

I just learnt yesterday that my guitar would be delayed by 3-4 weeks... This in itself is ok-ish (can't control production schedules, and I'm well placed in my current job to understand the impact of forecasts which prove incorrect). Especially disappointing to me since many dealers have received in-stock models since. Wouldn't pre-orders get priority? Additionally some people who ordered at the same time than I did are already getting their guitars (again, not their fault at all).

It's not the dealer's fault and I consider them blameless in this. But I'd expect better place-in-line management from a company like MusicMan. It's possible my guitar was ordered a few hours or whatever later and as such required planning another batch; cool. But 3 to 4 weeks delay over the latest ETA?

Sorry for the rant. I'm a little disappointed is all. No one's fault really.

If dealer A puts an order in for 50 guitars... presold by him or not, that dealer will get his 50 guitars before your dealer B puts your personal order in a few days later.. from what I understand... I believe they make them as they are ordered.

Fwiw, I ordered on 7/4... and have heard along the way dec/jan completion time frame... I have last heard is due around 1/22.. the exact date you are given by your dealer is just an estimate..

Yeah, which is exactly what makes this more frustrating. But eh. Just a guitar at the end of the day, and it's not like I don't have others :p Good luck with your wait!

I haven't been able to find one to play yet. How does the neck feel....compared to an Axis?

The Valentine is really the only guitar on my radar right now, I just know I won't be able to try one out anywhere. :(

I have a Valentine and owned an Axis. They are both "C" shaped necks but the neck on my Valentine feels bigger/fuller than the neck on my old Axis. You'd be hard pressed to find a more comfortable neck than the Valentine. It's my favorite neck out of all of the Music Man models I've played.

Agreed; it's a very comfy neck.

Overall the Valentine is a FANTASTIC guitar. The ONLY things I would change, which are of course 100% subjective, especially since it's a sig model:
1) Forearm contour. The advertised wedge shaped body does nothing for comfort. It's not an uncomfortable guitar, but the wedge shape doesn't eliminate sharp angles and it's not nearly the same as a forearm contour. My (lack of) picking technique requires some contouring and the wedge shape didn't make up for it
2) More easily swapped pickups :p That's just me of course. I genuinely LOVE the way this guitar sounds, but I wouldn't mind trying it with a humbucker in the bridge and a 5 way switch sometimes. With the boost and PCB-based electronics cavity it'll be a tougher change

The second item is not a deal breaker or changer in any way; the guitar sounds HUGE, fantastic, and is incredibly versatile.
The lack of forearm contour mean I don't pick her up nearly as often as I want, since I try to practice a lot to cover a severe picking deficiency I developed through being self-taught. A shame, but I'm keeping it since when I do get to correct it, I'll find her more enjoyable :D
