Question Not a 4 over 2?

No. That is pretty much their trademarked guitar headstock design. When they did a 12 string it was 8 over 4. Straight string pull and a short headstock.
 
The Pre-EBMM Stingray and Cutlass were 6 inline like a fender, but those were Leo Fender and company.

Are you not a fan of the 4 over 2?

AH! I always forget about those early guitars. The basses always had the 3 + 1 headstock, so I guess when guitars came back, they wanted them to match the basses.
