BP have you ever pondered having an EB Museum?

I think that would be very cool especially if you opened it in a city that has a big music scene.

I just noticed...the body appears to be a slab body like a preEB, meaning it has no arm or belly contours.

I'm really curious now about the manufacturing time frame history. Was there EB StingRays built before the SLO factory opened? I ask because on Gav's site there's a pic of an '85 StingRay, even that one had contours.

Being a youngster, I'm wondering if the finish on that bass is one of those "goopy old finishes" I've heard you talk about?

I've seen some old pre-EB rays with pretty crap looking sunburst that I guess could be called goopy, but I'm too young to really know what you're talking about!

#1 is very cool old school. The fact that it doubled as an R&D guinea pig just adds to it!

Sounds to me like you know exactly what he's talking about, actually, except those 'goopy' finishes were pre-Ernie Ball timeframe, so no, that red one wouldn't be goopy.

The finish was an adhesion problem between the laquer base coat and the top coat. it is an 84 Tiffles you may not be a three band but you are a ten speed!

That finish is flaking off the undercoat just like the paint on the left rear quarter panel of my car...red paint, white primer...

things that are old ( i.e. post 1980 ) really appeal to me...

No, 1988 was the year for the soft goopy finish. Between two other bass forums there are people who have posted several pics of their basses that all were dated '88 that have the finish that is still soft enough, you can dig your fingernail in it and scrape away at it. Years ago I also borrowed a trans teal from late 80's that did the same thing...when you got it really warm it got really gummy.

Two different timeframes - if BP wants to explain what happened to those later ones, that would be better. I remember the general issue but it's always more accurate to have the boss clear it up.

I had one of those, a trans red one. I had heard it was a problem with the glue used in the cases, and that it caused some sort of reaction with the finish.
