so i'll chime in with the other side of the story ...
i went off to college with my best friend in 1996. We'd both gone to school together since we were 5, our parents knew eachother and all that good stuff. We did all sorts of fun and crazy stuff together throughout the years.
When college stuff came up we both decided to go to UC Davis. That's about 1.56 hours away from home so both our families caravaned together to move us in. A bunch of our friends came up as well.
We got there - got our keys put our stuff in the room. Our parents hugged us, dad's gave us the "hey did you see the girl down the hall" look and our mom's started crying. I didn't really get why... we were only 1.5 hours away.
Well, after they left the first thing I did was set up my stereo. I guess I was the only guy in the dorms with a 500 watt stero with 2 Infinit towers. LoL. Got it all hooked up, put on some Pennywise really loud and within 10 minutes people started showing up. Some of the best friends I had all thru college showed up in those first 10 minutes: "hey, i heard Pennywise so I figured you're cool. I'm assuming you skate too". Easy as that ...
It was a great time. Me and my friends were a pretty troublesome bunch but there was always someone sane enough to say "hmm, maybe that's not a good idea".
Anywho... I guess what I'm trying to get at is that college is pretty kick ass. Your kids will miss you as much as you miss them but they're usually too distracted by all sorts of fun (and sometimes classes) to realize it... but they do.
Personally due to the responsibilities of college kicking in (make sure to take care of loans, get to class, studying, phone bills, etc) my relationship with my parents got way better. I "got" them more... looked back on previous things and finally understood what they were getting at and had an idea of how they were thinking.
Chuck - you'll miss her - but you're always gonna be daddy.... no way in hell she's not gonna miss that

I feel for you, Mr Ward. My kids are only 8 and 3, but I already try to mentally adjust to all the stuff that will be going on later in life.

Best of luck, Chuck! My little girl is about to turn 2, and I can't imagine the day many years in the future she leaves home.
Hang in there Chuck - It's a wonderful milestone - much rougher on parents than kids. My son will be a high school sophomore this year and my youngest starts 1st grade w/ 2 in between. I'm trying to squeeze every moment out of it while they're all home. I know I will be a basket case when the first one goes.....

My son starts high school this year, that is a big deal to him so I have to consider that too. But somehow I think he will adjust to that just fine. He already has his college plan down, he and several of his skateboard friends are going to take a year off after high school, drive to Cal and skate for a year, then come back and live with us and go to school here in town. Pretty good plan as far as I'm concerned.
All he has asked me to do is find him and his crew an old school bus for the trip to CA. I secretly want to go on this trip. I will say this about my boy, he knows how to have fun.

My daughter is only 4, and my son 2, but I miss them terribly on those rare occasions when they stay overnight at grandma's. I can't imagine an empty nest.

lol my poor parents just lost both my brother and i to brisbane within about 3 months of each other...and then i told them i was leaving the country and didnt know when id be back...

Mum wants to come and adventure with me, she misses all the trekking she did when she was younger than me!
Dad has always known im the wild creative one and has always always supported me through what ever scheme or job id get up to...plus i told them a bunch of old farts are looking after me in america. i can type that cause i learnt that you cant hear me!!!

I'll keep a steady shoulder ready for you, Tiffs, but trust me when I tell you that I'm not old enough to want to keep you from getting in (minor) trouble.
Until I met Erika, I was always in trouble and wouldn't have had it any other way. I've had a grand time!
Now I can't even THINK about Jeremy not being here, which is okay because he's only 4 and college is way off. Given his genetic make-up, I expect him to be smart enough to make only good mistakes, but I hope to be around to see even the dumb ones. It's like watching your heart walk around outside your body, isn't it?
