AFter playing for 33 years, I realize I need:

1- good clean
2- good blues tone
3- good chunky rhythm tone
4- searing lead tone

I don't need 17 variations of each.

you really don't need a swiss army knife to get you there. Most amps will get you there. If I have those bases covered, I'm gonna sound like me.

+1 on that, my playing is evolving but I sound like me and i have a GT-8 for all the variation stuff, the amp i have now is perfect and simple to use:)

I just purchased the bgner line 6

the sound is great...though a little harsh if you like it loud, but the high end seems to blend better if you stand about ten feet away.
I am having problems with the volume going up and down. I don't mean between pre-sets either, I mean I'll have one sound and I'll be in the middle of a set and the volume will cut in and out. I've heard this was common with line six. Is that true. I'm wondering if I should just exchange it for a different amp. I really like the Diezels

Guys, come on now! Selling the mark IV is a great idea! He wants versatillity, and the Line 6 spider valve ISSS sick.

P.S. no more don't sell the mark comments. You'll change his mind, and I wont have a mark IV to play through ;)

For the price paid, I feel that it's not such a good bargain. Made in China (inherent quality problems are on their way I'm sure, just give it some time), lots of settings that are useless in my opinion, and resale is going to be terrible because they'll come out with a new model within two years. Did I mention it's rediculously high? It doesn't get my vote.

A PodXT plus Atomic amp blows it away. Mostly due to the Atomic's tuned and ported oversized closed cabinet designed by famed cabinet maker Harry Kolbe. The Spider Valve has minimal effects and Pod 2.0 models. With the Spider Valve, every model uses a real V30, which can be good or bad. Next time your in the store try hooking it up to some different cabinets.

I've never played a Mark 4. Tonal bliss?

+10000

edit:
1)just found out that i gave this statement a +1 recently..;-)
2)have to admit that even if the sounds given with the xt live and the atomic are really fine the cost of both would also have allowed to invest into something all-tube..
3)also have to admit that i am not using that much models...a handful of them does it all...on the other hand life is about variations, isnt it ? ;-)

That's my Diezel VH-4s right there - the four channels you actually need!

I've spent a lot of time with the SpiderValve/Bogner... and initally it impressed me... a lot better than the other Line6 stuff.... but after playing a gig with it I changed my mind... it just dosen't feel right... something is still missing... It dosen't have that touch sensitivity a great valve amp has... I use the volume control on my guitar a lot and with my old Marshall I can get so many different tones.... from clean to just on the edge of feedback overdrive to all out mayhem... all with a simple well designed single channel amp... the Line6 is not for me....

I don't like all my eggs in one basket, so to speak. I prefer my effects separate from my amp. I have not tried the Spider Valve; however, I do prefer tube amps for all the reasons listed thus far.

My advice would be to keep your quite versatile Mark IV and plug in your pedalboard.

I've been toying with mine....realized I had my speakers conected to the 8 ohm, where apparently they should be connected to the 4 ohm.( this is because i'm using two cabs with 4 12's in them....apparently one cab is 16 ohm...then if it is switched to stereo 8 ohms then two mono cabs are 4 ohms....Weird!) Anyways my sound is smoother now and I played all for hours and couldn't get the volume to drop.

As for the different tones you just have to use the presets...which i prefer. that way each "sound" i use is consisted regardles if where i have my volume knob. It comes with a volume pedal as well so...it works for me. The sound is really good, and I used to hate line 6 stuff before. it was all noisy, I prefer amps like the new EVH and Desiel which are tube amps with a nice thug.. Thug, crunch, tone, and articulation that's what I look for. the bogner line 6 does pretty well in these areas,

Word, I would stick with the Mark IV. When I played the Line 6 Spider Valve amps at high volume, the tone was very harsh and really digital sounding. The Mark IV is a very versatile amp, it just takes some tweaking. If you go to Grail Tone - Home Page you can find a bunch of settings for the Mark IV and use them as a starting point. In my opinion getting rid of the Mark IV for a Line 6 is a bad move. Sure there are other amps that sound better than the Mark IV, but a Line 6 definitely doesn't sound better than a Mark IV.

I kinda figured this thread was dead..

Anyway, I am definitely getting rid of the Mark IV.. although not for a Line 6.

At this point in time, it's not the amp for me. I'm going to back to Carvin amps. I really really like their amps a lot. I had a Legacy for a long time, and I loved the tone of it.. especially the clean channel which in MY opinion was lacking on the Mark IV compared to other amps that I've played through.

I gave it a good solid 8(or so) months, and tweaked and tweaked and tweaked. It's just so damn sensitive. I felt like if I moved it to a rehearsal I'd be spending 20 minutes dialing in the perfect tone all over again which I'm just really not into. Too many damn knobs.. and it's SO HEAVY.

I'm just over Mesa for the time being.. and if I purchase another disgustingly expensive amp.. it will probably be a Bogner, but that won't be for a year or two.

Thanks for all of your replies. Don't worry.. Line 6 was only a short lived temptation.

I had two of them and the clean is horrible, very digital and flat. The distortion mode is where the amp shines but its a one trick pony and while it appears to be built well, it is not. Both of mine broke down after 2-3 weeks. I now use a mesa boogie Express and could not be happier. Line 6 = JUNK IMO.

Dude, they're not cheap amps. I think they're well made and the quality is great for the price.. and just great in general. I've always been a fan of Carvin's products.. guitars AND amps. If I weren't playing EBMM guitars I'd be playing Carvin.

I put my Legacy through complete hell when I had it, and it never once gave me trouble. It had been dropped several times, and survived all the clubs and taverns that I played at over the years. I owned it for several years until Hurricane Katrina destroyed it.

I don't understand where you got the idea that they are cheap? Did somebody tell you that? I don't like my Mark IV, and I'm selling it to get an amp that's not as expensive and sounds great. I'm looking into getting either another Legacy or the V3. I trust Carvin.
