There's something missing there.

It's about manliness. We're talking about marriage. Those are two very, very different things, though they are not mutually exclusive. Hey, I just took a vacation that was all about manliness. I went to Indianapolis, the original cathedral of speed, gasoline and absurdly loud noise, and spent four days straight immersed in car racing, eating too much meat and generally behaving like that picture of me with the turkey leg (which was taken at Indy, BTW). I had a grand time.

Guess what? My wife didn't come along. Good thing, too.

How long would most guys stay married -- really -- if they behaved that way all the time at home?

A lasting marriage is all about subverting your own personality, wants and needs to a certain extent in service of the marriage. This goes for both man and wife.

It's just that we have to do it to a greater extent than our wives do. <ducking> Honey, put the frying pan DOWN, okay? ;):D

I realize the article wasn't about marriage, it was about manliness. The posting of that article was in response to the Pirates article, which basically says the same thing only in a more tasteful manner. I know that the EB Forum is NEVER guilty of derailing threads, so sorry about that...

I think the point here is that *both* sexes are tired of being pigeonholed into the roles that They in Society tell us to identify with. Frankly, I'm tired of the "oooh, better watch out, she's an 'Empowered Woman' and better duck when she has PMS" crap -- just as I'm sure all you men are tired of the "men need to suck it up and be emasculated every day in order to please women" crap. I'm actually tired of men NOT standing up and taking the reins of power and control when the time calls for it. More and more these days you see a blending of the interests and identities of women and men, which is a good thing. I think it enables us to better understand each other's personalities as first humans, then men/women, and then as the individual. However, as the article states, this doesn't mean that we should stifle these differences, but rather celebrate them -- and manage not to rub them in each other's faces.

I think that understanding the larger group of your husband's/wife's sexual identity as a male or female is a huge part of marriage. And so there is the full circle. It wasn't a complete derail after all... :D

The man is the head of the household!

The woman though is the neck of the household and can turn that head any way she wants to! :D

Here at our house we are a team and we work together very well. My wife is a strong and independent woman and doesn't "need" me at all, we trust each other and there is much love here. We’ve been together since high school, a steady relationship since 1974. We have already bought our retirement house and I truly think we’ll be together for ever.

But this thread is supposed to be a funny thread, so to hell with all the seriousness, let’s have some fun! :D

Okay Okay Okay :D

I'm a bassist damnit! I can't sing, so I'll stand in the back and hold down the bottom. And by the way, you've just listed all my hero's.

My husband of seven months (we've been together 15 years) thanked me yesterday for "giving him the room" to make a major change in his life. He was glad that I tried to be supportive but not pushy or judgmental about it. I was gratified that he recognized my effort, because I had no idea if I was succeeding. He's done the same for me many times.

To me that is what a good relationship is about. Each person tries to support the other person in the things they choose to do. You take on the other person's agenda for their life as yours. And when they do the same for you, you acknowledge it. Yeah, there are tough times. There are times when you are very unhappy with what your partner is doing, or unhappy with yourself and that bleeds into the relationship. But if there is a foundation of mutual respect and support, it gets as simple as two people sharing their lives.

Some of my co-workers hold a lot of stereotypes about relationships and how people are or are supposed to be. It bothers me. Be honest about and to yourself. Ideally you'll find the right person to share yourself with. I think one of the least productive things in life is to try to get another person to change what they're doing or the type of person they are. Why not change your own attitude?

I hope that wasn't too heavy. I do think The Rules are funny, and the men's rules back are pretty good too.

The Male is endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, namely the right to control the remote control.

+1.

Between us, Chuck and I have nearly 50 years of successful marriage experience under our belts. We know what the score is from first-hand knowledge.

So, n!k, how long have you been married? Just curious.

So how many years of being married is required for second-hand gay jokes, crude ignorance and poorly written internet humor to be funny? Is it the same for fart jokes? I'm sure you've farted much more than I have. I bet I just couldn't understand the really high brow fart jokes that you could!

Well, I don't think you have to be married at all to engage in those things. The gay jokes, in particular, are interesting for me because my best friend, ever, turned out to be gay and only told me when we were in our mid-20s. Hell, I don't think HE knew before that. You want to talk about funny? Yeah, we had some funny times. But he's dead now, so take that with a grain of salt.

Personally, I doubt that I have farted more than anyone. Or, if I have, it's been extremely secretive.

My point is this. I can appreciate how silly life is. Given where I've been and what I've been through, I have to appreciate how silly it all is. Not everyone has those same advantages, which leads, sometimes, to INTERNET ANGER.

Let's all get a grip, shall we?

In my high school yearbook, Class of '74, I was voted least likely to close a thread based on lack of humor.

Let's keep me on a roll, shall we?

Chuck,

That list was read to me at my reception by my sister-in-law!
Everyone laughed. I didn't think it was that funny at the time since I knew it was true!
Pass the beer nuts!

No one is mad, not me either. You guys will have to learn my humor, which the class of 2003 voted on me as the "funniest" in class. So the people of Iowa have spoken!

And yes, look at my avatar.
