Hey mesa, have you ever caught Fates live? Ray Alder is unquestionably one of the most flawless vocalists I have seen live. I was simply blown away by that mans range, technique, and intonation.

I also have to agree with you on Arch. I though he was amazing during the 80's, because at that time there was nothing to measure him by really. However, after the first time I had heard No Exit, It was hard to go back and listen to the earlier stuff. Truthfully, I don't think the problem with Arch, wasn't so much his voice, as it was the length and number of words that he would try to fit into a verse. I still like that earlier stuff because it was a huge influence on me. However, I definately prefer Alder. BTW, has anyone heard the album John Arch did with Jim Matheos and Mike Portnoy a couple of years ago? There was some pretty cool stuff on there.

Back to Octavarium. I am loving this album more and more with each passing day. i believe someone else had already stated this, but I have to say/concur that the production on Octavarium is absolutely stellar!!!

I never caught them live. One of the bands I really wanted to check out but I kind of lost track of them right after Inside Out. They either didn't come very near, or were so low key I missed them entirely. I hate that Mark Zondar is gone now. It's sad how they are sort of falling apart all because radio stations would rather play Ashlee Simpson crap. They'd rather give the untalented a free ride and let those who work thier butts off hold thier careers together with scotch tape.

Hey Pete,

Thanks for posting that sampling.
I'm kind of new DT fan trying to see what all the hype is about.
I had purchased the Live at Budokan DVD which is pretty good. But I wouldn't know where to start as far as buying a CD.

If those songs are from the new album, then I'll be buying that soon.
Very nice!
Thanks for the ear candy.

to me TOT and Octavarium are both tighter sounding than their previous efforts. but since you MADE me say it: ..."tighter" in the "drop-D a la' CREED" sense.

yes! yes! bring your insults and jibes. I fully realize that at the end of the day my opinion means nothing because Jp and company have lots of money and signature instruments, and I'm just some balding chump who legally isn't allowed to work in the country I'm living in because of my "spousal" visa.

I think you're a little gunshy about forums!! :D This isn't that kind of place. Everyone here is pretty level headed and open minded to other people's opinions. Feel free to share yours here without persecution. :)

BUT, that also means that others will share their opinions and maybe disagree with you. I think you will find when that happens, it is done in a very respectful way. For example, I really was just curious about what you meant by the two albums being similar. That's something I hadn't thought of and I really wanted to know. I said to myself "did I miss something? and if I did, what was it?" That's all.

If you want anger and disrespect, check out the DT forums. Yikes!

I think it's called straining a knat and swallowing a camel... lol

A few riffs that remind you of something you don't like obscuring the wealth of other cool stuff. :)

it's not that I dislike this album. I haven't taken it out of my cd player since I got it. I just don't like it as MUCH as some of their other material. but this disc doesn't turn me off to anything they'll release in the future or anything.

and it's not that in any way the riffing obscures the rest of the material on the album (hey... did I even complain once about track 2?) - the album on the whole is of course extremly good, BUT when I think Dream Theater, I honestly don't think muscle-car style-tough-guy-guitar-rock chunky riffing...

oh, sorry, I was being overly dramatic for effect.

and believe me that I find great amusement in having a different opinion from everyone else because according to my wife, I'm wrong about everything. ever.

What about Pull Me Under, Most of the Awake album, Just Let Me Breathe, Burning My Soul????

Just picking on you man. DT has always had rather chunky riffing though.

Woah, me too... If you count a 94 Z28 being a muscle car but it is fast and loud. :)

Someone once said that John Myung was the only bass player they knew who 'warmed down' for like 3 hours after a performance. I can't remember if it was Petrucci who said that or Portnoy, or someone altogether different. (This is in addition to several hours of warming UP before the show!)

I think I read that comment on Derek Sherinian's website.

humm... that's so strange. that's just not at all the way I percieve their sound in my mind. I'm going to have to re-listen to a bunch of stuff now....

I always think of DTs music as light and shade - that's what makes their heavy stuff sound so powerful - the balance with the cleaner, more melodic stuff. personally, I am loving Octavarium in the car. i have it on my ipod/itrip and is currently most played, although I am rediscovering what an amazing album Six degrees is... :)

Hmmmmm, Octavarium, I think overall it is a good album. Not as good as 6 degrees though, for me, that album was definately Dream Theaters peak!!!!
