I remember when the EVH first came out. There was alot of buzz about the guitar initially, mainly because the design was such a departure from what people were used to seeing him play. Right off the bat, the Ed-heads were buying them up, and at the time, the band's popularity was at it's peak.
The down side though, was I knew alot of players at the time that avoided purchasing the guitar, even if they liked it, because it was so identifiable with EVH. It was almost like they felt if they played one on stage, everybody would expect them to play Eruption.
When the EVH became the Axis, within 2 years, alot of the players I knew that wouldn't buy and EVH owned an Axis. It was almost like they felt like it was okay to own one now that EVHs name wasn't on it.
I think that is the problem with Sig guitars. You can pretty much count on getting the Fan-Boys of the artist, but beyond that, it's hit-and-miss. It would stand to reason that the more popular the artist is, the better the sales will be after the fans have bought their guitars, but in my experience, it seems like it can work against you just as much when the customers don't neccessarily want to be associated with the artists style.
