Actually Leo did and then Mark Wentling and Tommy and Dudley did.....

I can't understand this myth ....the two band original was a boost only active bass...when it came out the P bass was like an mono and the stingray was surround sound...Now some fast typists love to perpetuate the one trick pony. Now we have the bongo and it is like HIGH DEF.

98 percent of the sting rays are three band cut/boost preamps...if you think that it only has one sound, you must be in the hearing aid line at wal mart.
Who are you kiddin'? The Bongo is a one trick pony too...I only hear one sound.....BOOM!!.:D

Right hand technique = many trick pony.

+1

...

I really hate the basses have too much sound options...
I love basses with strong personality. My SR is one of this.
If I need a sound I can't find in a bass, I like switch my instrument to obtain that sound...

A bass player can do it all with a P bass, a SR or a J, with only one sound, because with this basses you can play every music you want.

The versatility IMO it isn't a bass with many sound, but a bass with one sound it works for many kind of music.

My StingRay is one of this. My P bass too.

IMO, the Ray is very versatile.

I often think the one trick poney is the donkey trying to play it :D

Or the one trying to spell pony? ;)

There is only one trick a single PU Ray cannot do. If you really need that trick almost ALL the time, you ought to know damned well by common sense that you don't want a Ray or any other ax layed out like a Ray.

If you really really really really really gotta gotta gotta just gotta play a Ray [the best SO on the planet gifted it to you, etc etc], and you just really really gotta gotta have that one trick for certain songs, get a serious compressor and you ought to be able to get the needed effect. It won't sound exactly like soloing a neck humbucker, but it gets the job done in a similar, and less muddy, manner. Plus, you can use the compressor at milder settings for other useful things.

I remember a thread like this many moons ago.......
I think this thread began in the mid '70's and runs pretty much continuously with only a few minor intermissions and changes of venue. I think it's the longest running thread on broadway, with many touring companies spun off over the years that just hit the road and never come home [like Duke].

I have an acoustic guitar.

It has no knobs, premps, EQ's.

It can make country sounds.

It can make folk sounds.

It can make rock sounds.

It can make classical sounds.

But only if I pick it up.

One trick Pony

Few years ago, I cant realize my dream to have a good instrument. An Ibanez Sr885 was my main instrument, 2 PUPs with a sweepable mids, bass an treble, blend... but THE TONE wasn`t there. I´d put all my eggs in one basket... Fender P or Stingray.
My black 78 P arrived, then a modded P73 come to my house, and now ladies and gentleman... a brand new MMSR4.
You can achieve a lot of sounds from a passive vintage P, the SR4 it have the plus of 3 band eq !.

The tone its in your hands.
Simple is better.
Less = more.
One pickup its enough to me. Those jazzbass guys turn the knobs all the way up to avoid hum noise, so its the same to have one pickup!.
I insist, I don´t like the idea to see a Stingray with 2 PUPs. One pickup looks great. It´s like a racecar, you need only the basic things. Basic, effective, direct to the ...
Well, if the market want another bass, don´t do it under the name of Stingray. Next NAMM we can see a Stingray with a Rickenbaker sound and body shape?

So what's that ax in the cabinet, with 9 strings, weird tuners, and a body like a gold toilet seat?

And, as has been mentioned many times, you can still have the single pickup Stingray. No one will try to stop you, I promise.

If someone does try to stop you, you point them out to me, okay?

LOL

PS. I dont buy the "fingers make it a many trick pony" argument. You can do that on any bass....so if a rayH has many ticks an HH bongo has many many many tricks. buy my logic? :).

I'd just say, yes, the rayH isnt terribly versatile, however, it fits pretty much everything.
