OT: "We're taking our PA and Going Home!"

Okay, forgive me, but I need to vent:

We show up at this benefit gig on Saturday, and we find out that we are sharing the bill with another group. No problem, we get along well with others. So the plan is to alternate sets. They had been playing that afternoon, so their stuff (including the PA) is already set up.

So we set up and start playing, and their "sound guy" comes up and fiddles with the PA during the first song, and he gets the vocals sounding ok, keyboard ok, etc...

So here's the messed-up part: when we get done with our first set, the singer from the other band comes up and starts bitching that we've "messed up all the settings" on the PA, and they'll "never be able to get it set right again", so they are taking their PA and going home! Remember, this is a benefit gig, there are a few hundred people there, dancing and grooving, and now, poof! No more music at all for the rest of the night!

Naturally, we just said "uh, okay" and packed up our stuff! (At least the Sterling ruled, as usual--plenty of bodies moving to the bass!)

But what a bunch of tools, though!

Their sound guy changed the settings and they were pissed. Sounds like they were looking for an excuse.

It would've been swell to have brought your own PA and pulled it out after they had left. Heroes to save the par-tay.

Well, that's the explanation I'm going with!

I didn't hang around to find out WTF happened...I was more concerned about getting all my stuff safely back to the car...but the owner stopped me on the way out and said he liked what he heard, and "when can we get you boys back in here?"

The bottom line is we have to get our own PA...we've been lucky that most of our gigs so far have had a PA provided by the promoters, but if we're going to be gigging clubs more regularly (we just got a booking agent last week), we're going to have to bite the bullet!

a PA system set up in front of a crowd of people is a great tool to make people feel stupid and insignificant. What I would have done is jump on stage before they unplugged anything and relayed the story to the audience. Either they carry out their threat and leave... to the sound of boos and jeers from the audience, or, they change their mind and stay!
