The standard EBMM guard looks a little darker or brownish to my eye. Still looks pretty nice to me.

I agree the EBMM Shell is Brown, Honey Burst is definitely a multiple guard finish. I'll try Vintage Pearl down the road also.

Interesting... I knew they only made a few in trying to find one but I did not know there may be only 2 of them!! Too cool... I also just saw in another thread that you also own a YYS? I own #49!! I guess we have similar tastes and similar stables. I can only hope that the PDN Big Al becomes my second desert island bass. I feel like with these 2 there probably is no ground I can't cover.

That is too funny.....YES! I have YYS #100 and it they show pics of it on the new born page.....love it. The two basses that sit out on stands ready to rock both when I practice and at gigs is my YYS and my BigAl5. I have been contemplating going to flats with the BigAL but instead I just ordered a set of Fodera 40-55-75-95-120 nickles to put on instead. I love the sound of those strings on my YYS so I believe with the incredible tonal variations that the BigAL provides, giving them a try shouldn't be too much of a stretch (and I love the feel of the lighter gauges compared to the 45-130 sets and I do not believe the tone suffers one bit).

Cool...I can see myself taking the Big Al and #49 to ALL my gigs now. I got the BA today and it is just such a pleasure to play and the tones are awesome! For what it's worth I put a set of Flats on The Big Al tonight and HIGHLY recommend the experience!! I actually prefer it with the flats by a HUGE margin! There is something that just gets right with the flats. I found the pre and string combination to be a bit too bright for my tastes with the stock strings. The Flats have given me EXACTLY what I was looking for with this bass. I use the Stock strings on #49 after having tried a LOT of different strings for her. There is just something magical about that combination I think. Needless to say the BA is a BEAST in the BEST possible way and is exactly what I was looking for in every way! The neck is simply the MOST comfortable 5 string neck I think I have EVER played and I will have to admit that I see it moving to my number one spot over the Fodera for most of the things I am doing right now. I am a VERY happy man and I take my hat off to BP and the guys at Ernie Ball for continuing to amaze me with the tools they are bringing to the table these days....Good to know where my twin is! Good luck and God Bless! Play her in good health....ALWAYS!

Peace,

T

Interesting......and I have certainly been debating the issue.
I also ordered a balanced set of Circle K strings to try out on the BA5 because I have heard they have some of the sound properties of flats......so we shall see.

What flats did you put on the BA?

(Also just order my red tortoise PG for the BA today)

I have a set of Sadowsky Flats on her now that I had sitting around the house but I want some more Group IV Balls as soon as I can get some. I think they would really sing on this bass! The Sadowskys are good but there is something about Balls on a Ball that just works for me. The tension is a bit lighter and feels more even on the Group IVs I have used before to...I am still debating the guard issue. Can't decide on a Clear or Red or maybe even Brown Tort...The finish on mine is exceptional and I almost hate to cover her with anything!

Peace,

T

Here's one with a standard EBMM Tort guard on it. I quickly put this guard on it just after receiving it (back when it had the first neck that snuck out of the factory with those pesky frets on it) to see how it would look and I took a few pics of it.

I'm not sure how red the standard EBMM Tort guard is compared to the one Laneline ordered but....here it is.

This is a tough call between these 2 guards

Brown tort & Vintage white both look really good.

Thanks for taking all the pics guys

The Red tort looks nice as well but I think I give the edge to the brown if I'm going tort

Any other PDN pickguards out there?

I have a clear guard on mine right now. If the sun's out tomorrow maybe I'll get a pic of it.

Got my Red Tortoise PG for the Big Al today.........drumroll..........and it DID NOT FIT!
Called them up and am sending it back for a do over.....sucks!

On another note....I put a set of Circle K balanced on the Big Al 5 and these things kill!
I went with a light set cause I really like how they feel on my Fodera YYS.
These were 124 - 94 - 70 - 53 - 37 and it took a few days to dial in the neck so that it was low but without fret buzz.

I am absolutely loving these strings. When it passive mode it gets very close to the thump of flats.
When in active mode I can get that growl that you get from pure rounds.

Lovin it big time and I think these will be my permanent strings on the BA5 going forward.

Going with brown tort, id like the wood grain to be the highlight not the guard but i suspect for a gift next year I'll get the vintage white & change it up every so often!

I think the brown tort on the Honey Roasted is a sure winner.
I was going to buy one when I bought my clear pg but for the price I decided to wait.
One thing I'm considering is putting a trans brown tort like you see on accoustic guitars under the clear guard but so far I haven't found the right material for a price I can live with.

Check these out:

The Tigerstripe looks especially cool but the dark brown tort might be the one.

Wow. That clear PG kills!! Especially on your bass because it just looks like it's on fire all by itself. Nice one.

Also...I think any of those PG materials you posted would probably look great. I'm really wondering what the red/brown tigerstripe would look like. That seems like it would be the best colour match. But sometimes it's nice to have some contrasting colour. Where did you find those...if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks
