Man if JP or Steve Morse asked me to jam with them, I would jump at the chance. I am barely good enough to tune their guitars let alone hang with them. But why wouldn't you want to have some fun playing with these guys?

This really was a good post to put up Sterling just to set the record straight about a lot of idiots who do this on youtube.

A few Months back this guy from Brazil did a cover of Vai's For the Love of God. He was in his kitchen with a backing track and then let it rip, I have to say I was blown away and really impressed. I was reading the posted comments and there was an idiot who was saying how he missed a tap at 3:19 and his legato line at 4:01 was wrong and of course when I checked him out he had 0 videos posted.

I could care less if it was Petrucci himself you will always find someone who has something negative to say or that they can do it better and they always have nothing of themselves. There are only a handful of guys in the world in that 1% bracket and millions of idiots and crackpots. I still think of Dimebag Darrel, I was not a fan of his band but I thought he was a tremendous player and a really cool guy who was always spoken about greatly by his peers, and I also really dug the column in Guitar World he wrote for like two years and the poor guy is dead because some insane fan was unhappy his band broke up. The only thing that made me slightly happy about that tragedy was that someone else got to blow the guys head off before he could kill himself.

The day before the Super Bowl they had on classic interviews on ESPN and one was with Joe Montana. They brought up how he was best friends with Huey Lewis and Montana was talking about him in such awe and saying what a great guy he is and how he loves hanging out with him and the whole band because they are just great guys. I only mentioned this because most guys would probably laugh at someone who said they were a huge Huey Lewis fan and here you have the greatest quarterback in history who was not only his close friend but star struck.

BP dont even let it get to you one bit as the Petrucci's and Lukes of the world value your friendship as much as you value there's. I am sure your door is open to guys who once were on top of the world and now nobody could care less what they do today, even though I do not know you personally but I am a good judge of character, as I have seen you defend friends on here when someone has had something negative to say about them. Fame is fleeting and a funny thing. I built my whole life on loyalty and friendship and I could care less if a friend is riding high or hit the skids he is still my friend.

Life is better when you take a risk. Playing music with others is a great experience. It can be frightening, but it can be exhilarating also. Go for it. The world is full of armchair quarterbacks. Doing is where it's at.

Well, I know I dont belong on the same stage as sterling, John F, and Ed...but back at the party in dallas a few years back, all 3 jumped up on stage and jammed with me on one of my instrumentals.

One of the great musical thrills for me to be able to share that moment.

Wish I had a pic of that to frame.

Don't you just love internet heroes?

You're bang on when you say that music is a way of connecting with people. I've never understood why some people seem to think of it as a competition.

I was lucky enough to have my arse well and truly spanked by the devil at last year's UK knucklehead bash, but all it did was re-enforce the respect that I have for him as a player. If anyone doesn't have the right to share a stage with another musician, it's me, but it's all good fun...

Amen Jimmy, that night was one of the best music nights of my life, I was in a room filled with players a zillion times better than me (you included mate!) -and of course Albert lee (along with the UK Guitar media Mick Taylor, neville martin etc) but I got up there, and had a blast, OLPlayers wife captured it and it's up on you tube, and I let all my friends see it - not becuase I think I'm a good player but because I had such a high from doing it,

Music is the best legal high you can get, regardless of your skill, equipment or determination as long as you have fun doing it you'll get the true rewards of music. I saw people starting to bash benji in the thread that was locked down - in a nut shell - How dare you? - what gives anyone the right to knock any player? , let alone someone who's sold records on their playing as part of being in a band or a solo artist, this isn't Xbox there's no 'rating' system, you're as good as you want to be, and if you're lucky people will think you're good or sellable.

I love seeing new blood joining guitar land - there's young becca joined us Knuckleheads, how great is that a father inspired a daughter, and hey look 2 knuckleheads, to be honest the brand of guitar doesn't matter for this part - but if you had one person inspire another then that one inspires another - and before you know it - well it's not world peace, but it's pretty damn good! - that's where I want to be -

I've watched the GC session you tube videos a lot recently whilst working late at the office, something strikes me that Internet man may have missed, consumers are not idiots, to part with $4k (As I have done recently) on any guitar (MMMM 25th...) - isn't just a case of "hey -I'm guitar player X - by guitar y "- we want to know more - we want to know where it came from -how it was developed, who's been a part of that, who helped, who said that bit wasn't going to work and so on.

BP - I doubt you'll ever come to the UK but the stuff I see online with you on stage with all the EBMM artists makes me want to see more, how you're meant to do that without being on the same stage is a bit beyond me so best to carry on as you are!

I have no business being on this forum with my lack of skill. but I love the product and respect those who are skilled in the music craft. no matter what flavor they play. My parents took me to see Roy Clark cirica 1984 (I was 17)in Reno NV and I bitched and moaned the whole road trip about seeing a Hee Haw Country dude. After the show I was eating cold crow and it opened a whole new kind of music.

-snip-

When they come to my house we eat, talk, mess around with cars or smokers or whatever and always play music. Always. ALways. Do I think that I'm in their league....NO NO NO..do I feel that we can have a blast pickin? YES YES YES Do I play music with friends that play worse than me? Yes Its all the same....its a gift we can share

-snip-

And that is it right there, I am (and feel) the same way! I've jammed with some guys and even pros who were lightyears ahead of me, but I've also jammed with beginners and people at all levels in between. It's all about making music and having a good time, not who is better than who.

Koogie and Pete I agree, it's all about having a good time, feeling good, and enjoying the company of others regardless of talent. To enjoy a mutual passion for music is a wonderful feeling. Keep it up BP and pay no nevermind to a blogger.

The "guitar ego" has always been what kept me from playing out any more than what I have or do now. I have never understood that way of thinking. Why for so many people does it have to be a competition of who is better than who? I simply love playing the guitar and learning new stuff. There is nothing quite like the feeling of hearing someone play something so good that the hairs stand up on my arms. Then you have the people who just don't see it....or should I say don't hear it that way. These are the jerks that will probably ask you "Who do you think is faster....Albert Lee or Ace Frehley?".

It's a credit to you to have the balls to get on stage with them and easily hold your own..
.... especially with cameras etc rolling all the time.

Most would freeze and sh!t their pants !

Water of a duck's back Sterling :)

Keep kickin' it and have a ball doing it.
The pants thing....
That would be me

cool stories and insight BP - love em'!!!:)

Oh, there is an aspect of music that will ALWAYS be inherent - the measurement and competition of player skill - just like ANY other sport or skill.

However, some players are so self-absorbed by this one aspect that they lose sight of any and all other musical qualities.

I guess to each his own though.

I'm going to bump this back to the front because this is such a microcosm of life. Music, like golf, grilling, or any other hobby, is about the experience, and enjoying the ride (or the process) of getting better.

I'm just getting back into playing guitar, but I'll say this mirrors my experiences of over 30 years of playing golf. I have as much fun playing with guys who shoot 68 as when I play with guys who shoot 120. It's about doing something that makes you happy, and spending time with friends who feel the same way. It's about maybe trying to learn something from those who are better than you, and possibly trying to pass on your knowledge to someone with less experience.

In actuality, if everyone has an open mind and heart, we all have something to teach... and learn.
