Pick up Question

My Stingray(potentially nov 01 ) Pickup -two raised pole pieces A and D string.
What is rational behind it - sound quality?.
How does it affect the string height adjustment-any guidane on setting up.
When was design introduced,
Is it the current pickup design.

Loads of question -just loving this bass and the whole culture and ethos behind EB

The fret board is curved, and the polepiece height just reflects this. If you set up your bass correctly, the strings will be pretty much the same distance from their respective polepieces.

Ernie Ball were lazy and gave us a flat pickup cover.

If your bass is an '01, it probably has a slightly different design than the current pickup. The polepieces on yours will have right angled edges on it whereas the new design has bevelled polepieces for the soft-fingered amongst us.

Out of curiosity, why are the SR4's the only ones to have raised pole pieces?

This is the most relevant thread that the search dug up; apologies for raising it from the dead.

To be more precise: Only the SR4 single humbucker models have it. Even the SR4 with dual pickups have the pole pieces flush with the pickup cover.

My guess is: The SR4 single H is manufactured to be as close to the traditional specs as it has been for the last 25 years, so people don't start rumours about how "the older sounds better than the newer ones".

But more technical insight from the Makers would be very welcome.
