I’ve bought and sold a lot of guitars. I traded once, but in person. I have one I’m thinking about doing a straight up trade for. It’s difficult to selling guitar right now and I know what I want and think there are a lot of them out there so I’m considering offering this one as a straight trade. Question is how you protect yourself. I’d probably do it here or on the gear page or something like that. But do you get the guy on the phone first and make sure he’s legit, and how do you handle shipping etc.?

I've gone trades here before and it's a risk not really know the person and over a long distance. When I did a long distance trade with a forum member we each shipped our prospective guitar at our own cost with track number and such. I'm sure there are those that have gotten screwed over and that's sad to me. But again I've only done it here with established members. I think in the end communication is huge.

Good luck, Glenn |B)

Thanks. I might just do reverb and let it sit there for how long it takes.
Can't hurt to try FailBook MarketPlace, you tend to get more local people. I just recently sold an amp, we met at a GC. I tend to use the local police station as most of them now have cameras and areas for this type of thing. Try local. Whatcha selling?

I would like to think that I can trust strangers to be as responsible as I am when it comes to transactions, but my many years of buying/selling gear (in-person and remotely) has taught me otherwise. I have never done a remote trade, even with people on other forums that have really good feedback. I hate to be "that guy" but my trust in society as a whole is about rock bottom, so if it were me, I would sell mine first then buy theirs. Frankly, in the time I spent waiting for mine to sell, I would most likely get distracted by some other guitar and forget about the first one :D

Its an axis super sport. Great guitar but i am smitten with stingrays. I like the arm carve and the balance of the body shape overall.

good perspective. I am sticking with reverb. May take some time because the guitars i have sold online this year took forever and dealing with lowball offers that were way out of the ballpark was tedious. The local trades and sales i have done, 3X, have just been weird experiences. You meet a stranger in a parking lot, sometimes they don‘t show up, and your inspection of the gear is pretty limited. When i moved house this year i sold a bunch of non music stuff on Facebook marketplace and learned there are a lot of nuts out there. Either that or i don’t like meeting new people now that i am old. But i think it’s the former. That is why i live in the boonies.

anyway, thanks for the insight, all. No trades is the answer.

I've done several long distance rades on here with forum members and a couple on the Gear Page; never had a bad experience. If you're going to do that, it's probably best to do it with someone that's been around for a bit. What usually works best is agreeing with the other person to ship out on the same day. Yes, you're both taking a risk but obviously both people need to insure their packages for the full value.
