I saw that there was a discussion thread recently on recording hardware, but I am interested in finding out what others might be using as far as recording software. I'm going to be in the market for something to run on a Windows based laptop from home.

I'm probably going to be going the PodXT (Bean, Pro, Live???? not sure yet) route and was looking for software to record through that to. I know that Line6 is coming out with some software (Rifftracker) but don't know that it will be as full featured as some of the other products out there.

I've done some research but would like to hear some real life stories from folks on the forum if possible. I've looked at Cubase and Magix Sequoia and always see ads for GuitarTracks Pro and have heard about ProTools. A friend offered me a hacked version of Cubase, but I have a problem doing that. I'd rather pay for something that I'm going to use on a regular basis. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks for any input...
fred

I'm still using Cakewalk's Pro Audio 9 but am planning to upgrade to Sonar soon. Pro Audio 9 has been good to me, but Sonar looks to be better. I recommend it....

I'm using Cubase SX and I can realy recommend this stuff for U. It is very easy to learn and has a lot of fantastic options. I know that there are the Logics, Cakewalks and other things like that, but I've never worked with it. I'm recording and editing with Cubase from more than 4 years and I realy enjoy it. Have you bought some stuff already?

I haven't bought anything yet. I'm still doing research and stalling to see how Santa is going to treat me this year.

My friend who has the Cubase software has given that very high marks, I've sat with him while editing and creating some backing tracks and it looks pretty nice. There seems to be a lot to choose from now.

Does how I'm planning on recording to the computer make a difference in what software I look at? i.e. USB vs. PCI multi-interface card? Are some packages easier to work with depending on that?

thanks,
fred

Fsmith, this how are you planning on recording to the computer doesn't make any difference in a software. The difference makes an audio-card. If you have a PC (not a laptop) buy some PCI card - it is much faster than USB cards. You can feel the difference if you want to record in real time (and hear i.e. the virtual effects in real time as well). PCI card has lower latency (a time between this what you play and this what you hear from your speakers) than USB. I don't know about the latecny in Fire Wire cards, but I think it is much better than USB too.

Do you have any audio-interface in view? And what kind of recordings do you want to do (how many inputs do you need)?

MedORama$,

For now, I'll just be recording my guitar. I want to record ideas as they come to me as well as make some backing tracks to noodle around with. I'm thinking I'll end up using samples to create the drum parts for the backing tracks.

I know about the PCI interface cards and the multi-inputs available. I may end up with a PodXT for Christmas which has a USB interface although I could also use the output into a PCI card interface.

I thought I had read in some forums where some software packages didn't work real well depending on the interface you were recording to, which was the reason for the question about that.

For now, I'll be using my laptop for portability sake. I'm not set up where my computer and my guitar rig are in the same room. I might be later and will switch to the desktop computer at that time.

thanks,
fred

Mr. fsmith, :)

I'll give CUbase SX another high mark as well...if I can learn how to use it, anyone can. :)

Adobe Audition is awsome... formerly known as cool edit pro.

I used to love cool edit pro. I grew up in India, and access to tablatures/sheet music was not very good. I used cool edit to slow down the really fast solos I wanted to learn (while keeping the same pitch), and CEP was the only software that had this feature then.

I currently have Cakewalk Home Studio, but cannot seem to record properly using it thanks to me replacing my desktop with a laptop :( I have heard a lot of good things about Cubase and sonar too, but never tried them.

Mr. fsmith... damn that looks/sounds really weird. I knew I shouldn't have posted on that age/occupation thread... I'm a grown man, but my brain never developed past 18... Just ask my wife.

Anyhow, I guess I'm going to have to give Cubase a shot, hell if a moderator can figure it out... At least if I buy that I have a friend I can bounce things off of close by.

thanks,
fred

Ha! You think I was talking about you?!?!?! ;) Actually, that friend of mine who I turned on to EB has Cubase and a pretty sweet setup at home.

But you know I'd float a few questions out to you and the group, it's all about respect, and I respect the opinions of many around here. Except for maybe that KEI or whoever he is today guy. You gotta watch him. :p
