Retrofit Stingray With New Special Hardware

Hi All,

Anyone know if it’s possible to install the new, lightweight hardware that comes with the SR Special on older Stingrays? Seems like doing so would reduce weight. Saw a clip on YouTube saying the new tuners alone would save .7 lb. Or hipshot makes lightweight replacements, yes?

You will only be able to get that hardware from EBMM, and they don't really sell it, unless it's a replacement for a bass you already have. You would need to send in your tuners in exchange, however I don't think they would exchange the old style tuners for the lightweight tuners. They are also definitely not drop in replacements, and you'd be left with a very unattractive bunch of holes on the back of the headstock.

As for the bridge, no way. Totally different attachment system. If you really want the lightweight hardware, getting the new stingray would be the easiest way.

Thanks for your reply. Figured as much but thought it worth asking. Light weight is important and I do like SRs, so a Special is the way to go.

I have put Hipshot on several and it saves 1/2 pound. Helps with neck dive.
