I have one in Bass Guitar magazine for the Bongo when it first came out. It's the one that says"Think of it as a Stingray on Steroids" but that's the only EB ad I ever remember seeing for a bass..........

it was comped as part of our Guitar World contract. IT was a freebie

BP ~ as long as we have you online, maybe you can offer us your reason or reasons for not actively pursuing advertising space.

I realize this topic may have been covered, either here and/or at the Open House, but how about a quick refresher?

Thanks!

What's The Objective ?!?

Remember, he's not looking to sell to everyone, just musicians.

Most of the ones I know will appreciate his humorous approach.

In a former position as a retail level (speciality products) branch manager, I had a major disagreements with a regional supervisor who criticized me for not
- 'attracting more Floor Traffic'

The bitc* was rebutted with some hard data supporting my argument that I was trying *not* to attract more floor traffic, but rather to
- 'attract more Qualified Buyers'

Much of my success was developed on genuine, old fashioned, customer service and referrals
- I let everybody else chase the shoplifters &
- 'average consumers' (aka; 'wankers', 'lookie-loosers').

I really admire you for steadfastness on this issue of paid advertising Sterling. I finally succumbed after 8 years of never paying for any type of advertising for my business at NAMM last week and entered into an agreement with Bass Guitar Magazine for a series of ads this year.

Dunno what kind of ads I'm going to put in there...any suggestions??

I think I just might have some fun with these ads.

limit has good insight, but theres more to the story

I feel like everything it is a combo of jack and the product, but my mantra is that it starts with the product. The product is the foundation. Nice guys selling crap dont last long. Witty former linguists selling brand X are like bad tuna.

I wish it was so Big Ballz that we could operate without a strategy....We have actually a pretty decent strategy. we actually win awards and BS like that.

You want people to know that Jack is here to sell you the RIGHT Music Man for you. When I give lectures at business schools and distributor meetings and GC I stress that you wouldn't go to a Doctor that knew less that you so why would you buy your bass from a guy that knew less than you.

jack's goal should be to create synergy between the customer and the product.

But you can play just one. Especially one like BP and company builds. I feel like I am in ten times more need for a backup amp or cabs at a gig than I am a bass.

I am a harder sell than a lot of hard sells especially when I already have what I want.

That's certainly true. I had to write a really hard email, like, "Hey Tom, you want this Bongo?"

I'm telling you, it cost me.

I thought you only sent that e-mail to me! Two timer! ;)

Seriously, though, part of the allure of buying a bass through you, Jack, is how enthusiastic you are about the product. I can't tell you how many stores I've been to where the sales guy would say "I have one of these myself" and you could just tell he was blowing smoke. You know your stuff because you like it and enjoy it, not because you sat down and read a brochure the night before. You can't fake that. It also helps that the product doesn't need much of a sales pitch. I sold instruments for a while and some lines needed a "push".

Enough butt kissing. :D I like the website. It's straight forward and has good info, and I can see it expanding into something cool.

Well, see, you're both named Tom, so......

You're right about one thing. I love what I sell. And I'm not just the resident Sales Monkey....I buy the things myself. I know what it's like from both ends of the deal, and I'm not likely to ever forget that.

Well, unless I'm drunk or something.
