Maybe something like this:

Remembering the quest for homogenous (wooden) materials to achieve predictable sonic quality when designing the Bongo, the method described in the above paper might be another step.

Given that wood is a natural composite material, refining it to enhance certain properties of musical instruments might be a logical next step after just roasting it. Cutting edge domestic wood (pun totally intended) to replace rare and endangered species of wood for, say, fretboards really sounds interesting to me.

What are your thoughts? :)
