Saddest day of my life

Fog things are bad at the moment, the liver operation he had 8 weeks ago was deemed a failure, so we have to just keep him alive and healthy for a year so he can have the transplant. at the moment little Tom is in hospital now for what could be a long time, he stopped breathing last week and had to be rushed to hospital, his lungs had filled up with fluid. His liver isnt draining at all, so the fluid was busting out and getting the lungs somehow, the doctors dont know yet how this happened. Quite an unwanted issue really, so it will set him back on his goal to get to 8kg so he can have a liver transplant. We just want to be at home, and we havent spent 4 days at home for months, just in and out of hospital all the time. For the last 2 weeks he stopped feeding too, so now all his food is going in through a tube, which is going in through his nose into his stomach. Very sad to look at him now.

hey if it wasnt for playing guitar and buying a new ball every now and then id be seriously depressed! this forum rocks. lucky there's free internet at the hospital so i dont miss out on anything here on the forum!

he might play AL's later on, but if all the signs are correct he will be a LEFT HANDER! Picks up everything with his left, his left arm is stronger by heaps. Poor kid, next thing ya know he'll take up bass. at least he can play a bongo, they are the Ron Jeremy of bass guitars- funny lookin but they score the chicks.

Rob - I salute you for your ability to share what must be an incredibly difficult time for your family with us.

I have two boys 9 and 12, they both play rugby and get "injured" frequently - my eldest came home dazed and confused two nights ago after training (no "opponents" involved) with an egg sized lump on his forehead. It made me feel sick - but nothing compared to what you must be going through.

All I can add is stay strong and put your faith in whatever deity you believe in (if none just yourself!)

Rob...very sorry to hear what you're going through....I lost my sister this year to brain cancer after 4 long years of fighting....been a tough year.
We'll be praying for little Tom and family here in Charleston, SC.
All I can say is love him, love him, love him....your positive attitude will get you through this.

Wow man.. I definitely wish you luck and I'll keep your family in my prayers. I've always had the fear of one of my children having a major illness or disease. Thankfully, shy of an umbilical hernia, we've been blessed. I hope everything works out for you and your family.

I have to say that in the 4 years I've been on this forum (old school!), this thread has more emotion than any that come to mind. Take a frequent poster, his baby boy with a terrible disease, and a situation that seems to get more and more serious as the weeks go by.

Add the head of the company who has been down such a similar road with his own but older son, giving him one of his kidneys, and offering his help (and clout)to the poster, who I don't think he's ever met...

and add a bunch of guitar players who came for the instruments, but stay for the community, humor, friendships, hope, and comfort and you get a whole lot more than what this place started out to be for each of us.

Rob, we're certainly wishing you the best. And if not the best, at the very least...better.

Well, where to start. Belinda and I have been going through the toughest time over the past 4 weeks, and it gets worse from here. My 8 week old son Tom recently got diagnosed with a rare liver disorder calld Biliary Atresia, its just awful. We have been in the Children's hospital here in Melbourne for ages it seems, and today is the big day , right now Tom is in surgery having a major operation to correct the problem. Its a life threatening disorder and the surgery only has a 40% success rate, which is very hard to take. They have to stretch part of the small intestines up to the liver so the bile can flow. If it fails he will need a liver transplant, and we are hoping that is not needed as its quite rare to get one. Its seriously difficult to take as he is so lovely and has been a great kid for his first 8 weeks! He smiles all the time at me, we have a great time. Not much we can do but wait and hope for the best. Wish us luck!!
