Jon - Setup question re: my AL

So I made some setup adjustments to my AL yesterday - tuned down to D# with 10's, tweaked the truss rod (a little relief) and looosened the "craw" a bit. Now, when I was setting the intonation, I'm noticing that my springs on the E, A and G strings are pretty much as far back as they can go. I may lower the action a tad as well - will that further impact the spring issue?

Thindave I've had that issue before on other guitars as well. In my experience if the intonation is almost there but the spring is in the way, I've simply removed the spring and clipped a little bit of it away to give me more turns on the screw. You can always get some more springs from your local music store if you want to change the setup back. Also whenever I'm looking to buy a new guitar I look at the saddles closely. I figure if they are all pretty straight without much obvious tweaking before leaving the factory, maybe that means the intonation might be a little better than a guitar that have the saddles adjusted quite a bit. Don't know if that makes any sense at all but I do give it consideration before I buy a guitar. One of my Albert Lee guitars was ordered from a local dealer and when it arrived I was glad to see the saddles were just about straight as an arrow from low to high E. Anyway sorry to rattle on and I hope your new setup works great for you!

yes, I thgouth about that as well - didn't want to do it if I didn't need to...
After taking a closer look, I saw that I couldn't just lower the action any further, so I adjusted the truss rod a bit back - a little too much relief I think...

I need to find a sweet spot between strings that don't feel like thread (9's) and too much tension (what I get with the 10's in standard tuning). I'm using elixir nanoweb 10's and I like the way they sound and last (plus I have about 10 more sets in my drawer, so I want to get my money's worth :) ).

I'll see what today's adjustments have done tomorrow and try again...

How do you like the P90's by the way? I've thought about ordering a pickguard routed for P90's and routing the guitar myself. Both of mine are single coils and I'd like to have one with P90's but my wife would kill me if I got a third. I hate the thought of carving one up though.

I love them - I wanted a beefier sound than my Tele has and it fits the bill perfectly - rough, but not icepick-y...

Hey, what your wife doesn't know can't hurt you, right? :)

HA!

Now here's a question.....anyway to get the P90 version sans the silent circuit? I'd consider hotrodding a P90 version w/ the ToneZone P90s set....hehehe.

Rawk!
